Description of holiday house in Orciatico, Tuscany
A rare find in Tuscany – a new house in the heart of a charming hilltop village, only an hour from Pisa airport. Set in an exclusive development of only 13 apartments in traditional Tuscan style with a shared swimming pool, our property boasts views across the valley to Volterra, and is only a few steps from all village amenities. Orciatico is a delightful Tuscan village with a café/bar which is the heart of village society, 2 grocery shops and a restaurant. You can buy fresh local produce at the weekly market in Lajatico, only 10 minutes away by car. Lajatico is the birthplace of the opera singer Andrea Bocelli, who hosts a concert each year in May at the spectacular Teatro del Silenzio, also only 10 minutes by car from our house. The house has a spacious living room and a separate kitchen / dining room. There are 2 bedrooms upstairs, each with its own full ensuite shower room with shower, sink and WC.
The front bedroom has a double bed and opens onto a balcony with beautiful views. The rear bedroom has 2 single beds which can be made up as 2 singles or a double. There is a 3rd full shower room downstairs, also with shower, sink and WC, and a sofabed in the living room. For outdoor living, there is the front lawn which opens onto the communal courtyard, and the back terrace which is accessed from the kitchen, so you can follow the sun or shade throughout the day. There is no TV in the house, but we do have a radio cum iPod dock and speakers for you to play music from your own iPod or MP3 player, as well as a selection of board games. There is full gas central heating in all rooms. The kitchen is equipped with gas hob, electric oven, microwave, fridge and washing machine.

Location description
Orciatico at 300m above sea level is usually well above the frequent morning mist in the valleys, even in winter. It is the perfect spot to enjoy a slice of authentic Tuscan village life. There are 2 grocery shops, a cafe/bar, a restaurant and an ATM machine, all within easy walking distance. Orciatico has about 400 friendly inhabitants - you will definitely be welcomed as part of the village! There are several walking trails, ranging from easy to advanced, in the vicinity - several start from the village itself. And of course, you can cool off in our lovely swimming pool in the summer - pool towels are provided.
You can buy fresh local produce at the weekly market in Lajatico, only 10 minutes away by car. Lajatico is the birthplace of the opera singer Andrea Bocelli, who hosts a concert each year at the spectacular Teatro del Silenzio, also only 10 minutes by car from our house. Orciatico is a good base for sightseeing while being off the main tourist trail. The beautiful alabaster town of Volterra is only 30 minutes away and is our main local centre. San Gimignano, Pisa, Lucca, the Bolgheri wine route and the Tuscan coast are all about an hour away. Slightly further afield but still within easy day trip distance are Florence and Siena. Best of all, there are many delightful small towns to explore in the vicinity, and many excellent restaurants nearby.
Looking for day trips? Here are a few must sees:
Florence - It's a must-see stop for a reason, so even if you can't stand crowds and don't like art it's worth at least one full day. Beautiful, romantic and inspiring Florence should be the top of any Tuscan visitors list. An easy day trip from Orciatico, either by car (easy access to the FI-PI-LI motorway) or frequent and fast trains from Pisa or Pontedera.
Pisa - One of Italy's most famous symbols, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, is easily accessible, but there is also plenty more to see in this wonderful city.
Siena - Many a traveller's favorite spot in Tuscany, Siena manages to stay charming no matter how many tourists clog the streets in summer. The town is centered around the famous Il Campo, which is the site for the city's most famous annual event - the Siena Palio. A glorious and proud city with a beautiful cathedral and excellent views of the countryside.
Volterra - This delightful hill town is our local centre, only half an hour from Casa Pietro. Watch artisans at work in the famous alabaster marble workshops for which the town is famous. There is also an excellent Etruscan museum and a Roman amphitheatre. Volterra is one of our favourite spots for an atmospheric Sunday lunchtime stroll to watch the locals on their weekly 'passegiata'.
San Gimignano - One of Tuscany's most well-known hill towns, justly renowned for its many medieval towers. The drive towards the town from Orciatico is also very scenic. A must-see day trip, especially out of season when the tourist crowds are absent. Stop to taste the local Vernaccia wine along the way.
Bolgheri - A delightful village surrounded by some of the most renowned vineyards in Tuscany. Big-name 'Super Tuscan' wines such as Sassicaia and Argentiera are produced here and can be tasted in the village.
Other Hill Towns - Take your pick, but while you are here visit at least one of Tuscany's many small hill towns. It almost doesn't matter which one you choose. The towns near Orciatico are mostly off the main tourist trail and delightfully authentic as a result. Some pretty towns within half an hour's drive are Montecatini Val di Cecina, Peccioli and, of course, our neighbouring village Lajatico, birthplace of Andrea Bocelli.
Beach - The sandy beaches of the Tuscan coast are an easy and scenic 40km drive.
