Description of holiday house near Le Faou, Brittany
Estuary House is a spacious, light and airy detached property just perfect for family reunions or lots of friends who want to relax in gorgeous surroundings. This idyllic location is semi-rural just 1 mile from the pretty medieval village of Le Faou which boasts several restaurants, creperies, bars and all necessary shops. Large supermarkets are just 5 minutes away.
The house itself sleeps 12 comfortably and comprises 6 lovely bedrooms, 2 family bathrooms, 2 shower-rooms and 4 separate toilets. A huge open-plan sitting room, dining room and kitchen offer spacious living and there's also a laundry room and well-stocked library with a log fire on the ground floor.
The stunning 31ft living and dining room has 3 sets of french doors leading out onto a south-facing sun-drenched balcony with spectacular views over the estuary. The kitchen and 5 of the bedrooms all have the same view looking over the 2 acres of orchard and gardens which run right down to the estuary at the bottom. In season, there are plenty of estuary birds to be seen from here, we have binoculars and a powerful telescope for you to use, or wander down to the water's edge for an even closer look.
Ground floor:
Entering the house on the ground floor, the stairs are to your left and straight ahead is the 'library'. This is a delightful room with french doors opening out onto the extensive deck as you can see below, with wonderful views of the estuary, it has a sofa, 2 armchairs, reading light and a log fire. (Sorry, the fireplace is out of action at the moment). Bookcases run floor to ceiling either side of the fireplace and are packed with an extensive selection of paperbacks and also house a TV and video player and a stack of videos and board-games. (We're very happy for you to take any books home that you might be in the middle of, and leave some of your own holiday reading!)
The Laundry room is also on this floor, housing a washing machine, tumble-dryer, sink and drainer, iron and ironing board plus a clothes airer. As this room also houses the central heating boiler, it's a very warm room and ideal for drying walking gear or dive kit. Also contains the fourth loo.
1st floor:
Up the stairs to the first floor and into the 31ft sitting and dining-room - here you will see the most stunning view of the estuary through the 3 sets of french doors leading out on to a south-facing balcony overlooking the pool and gardens.
The sitting room, dining room and kitchen form an L-shape giving a very spacious feel to this area. The solid oak dining table is 2.4m long and easily accommodates 12 people.
The sumptous leather seating area surrounds a solid oak coffee table, and in the corner is a TV and CD/DVD player with USB socket for your MP3/iPod*. We have UK satellite TV so quite a few UK channels are available. (Contact me for a list if you'd like to see what's available) * Please note - the USB socket is only compatible with JPEG/MP3/WMA files although we also have a Universal iPod docking station for your use.
The spotlights and a dimmable uplighter make it a cosy room in the evenings.
At the end of the landing on this floor is a family bathroom with a fabulous jacuzzi bath, shower, bidet and a separate toilet.
Should you feel the need to cook, the kitchen is fully-equipped with a large fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher and a huge gas oven with grill, rotisserie spit and a 5-burner hob. The cupboards are filled with plenty of glassware, crockery and cookware and we even have plastic plates and cutlery for the little ones, plus one booster seat. We've found the kitchen to be a very practical layout, particularly as other guests can chat to you from the dining table. Downside to that though - they can see you drop that steak on the floor!
2nd floor:
Moving on upstairs are 4 bedrooms; 3 doubles and a twin. Two of the doubles have washbasins in their rooms, the twin has two full-sized single beds, one of which pulls out from under the other.
Also on this floor is a large family bathroom with a bath and shower and a separate toilet.
3rd floor:
Up another flight of stairs and you're in the loft, there's a toilet on the landing for these 2 bedrooms to share. From this level are found the most spectacular of the views, well not from the loo exactly, but both bedrooms have 2 sets of windows and have far-reaching views around the coast to the open sea and the Bay of Brest.

Location description
Quimper (pronounced CAM-PAIR)
Is a beautifully picturesque riverside town. It takes 30 minutes to drive there and is perfect for a stylish and sophisticated shopping expedition - shop 'till you drop territory! - Or just wander around the cobbled streets with their half-timbered houses and do a little bit of people-watching from the dozens of pavement cafés.
Don't miss the central square with it's magnificent cathedral or the indoor market which has the most mouth-watering selection of typical French gastronomy!
Weekly outdoor markets are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Pointe D'Armorique
This beauty spot is only a 20 minute drive away (directions at the house), great place for a lazy day on the beach coupled with a wonderful crêperie overlooking the sea. If you arrive in the area too early to access the house then this is the ideal location to spend a couple of hours.
The Crozon Peninsula:
From the top of the Menez-Hom (well worth a visit), a hill situated at the beginning of the Crozon peninsula, there is a magnificent panoramic view over Dournanez Bay to the south. To the north, the outlook is over the River Aulne, and its almost fjord-like estuary where it flows into the Brest Channel.
At the mouth of the Aulne lie the remains of the ancient 5th century Landévennec abbey which is just about visible from the house.
The Crozon Peninsula is legendary for it's panoramic views, stunning scenery, sandy beaches and historic fishing ports - you must visit Camaret, Morgat and Concarneau at least......
Camaret-Sur-Mer
A small fishing village, Camaret was once a very active crayfishing port and has now become a charming tourist resort. It still looks very much like a harbour but over the years most of the colourful sailors' houses have been transformed into cafés, shops, seafood restaurants and crèperies.
The harbour of Camaret is protected by a curved natural jetty, on which the famous architect Vauban built fortifications to protect the port of Brest. The Vauban Tower now hosts a small maritime museum and was classed a World Heritage site in 2008.
Although there are dozens of restaurants in Camaret, the Côté Mer Café Brasserie Restaurant is very highly rated for the freshest seafood and great steaks, the staff are great fun too!
Concarneau - Not to be missed!
The medieval walled town of Concarneau is one of the most photographed in Brittany. Stroll around it's narrow cobbled streets among the 90 shops, galleries, restaurants and creperies, and you'll often see street performers and musicians there too.
There are also boat trips out to the Isles des Glenan, a small archilepago and seabird sanctuary, and if you're up in time it's worth going to the early morning fish auction, 'la criee', a great experience although the daily business of selling fish is still a complete mystery! The Fishing Museum is well worth a visit too.
