Ffrydd House applies environmental principles in such a way that demonstrates that being environmentally friendly does not have to involve hair shirts and compromised comfort. We want to show that living in an eco-friendly way is not scary and is not obviously different to the life you currently lead. The changes we have made are subtle but effective – the idea is that you will not even notice!

If you would like to cook, the house is very near a large independent supermarket and several grocery shops.

If you do not feel like cooking, the house is near the award winning Saffron Indian Restaurant and take-away (highly recommended) and Knighton boasts many other pubs, restaurants and take-aways. See our local information page for more details of food options.

Knighton is a small, busy market town and is the only town situated actually on Offa’s Dyke – its Welsh name “Tref-y-Clawdd” means “town on the Dyke”. With part of the town - including the railway station - in England, Knighton typifies the mix of Welsh and English heritage found in the Marches.

Knighton is mid-way along the Offa’s Dyke Path National Trail and at the start of the Glyndwr’s Way National Trail. The Offa’s Dyke Centre, less than 10 minutes walk from Ffrydd House hostel, offers extensive information on the National Trails, the history of the area and local walks. It also hosts the Knighton Tourist Information Centre.

This part of Wales is full of glorious green lanes, quiet and perfect for all ages and abilities to explore by bike. Whether you are looking for a gentle cycle ride through country lanes, a challenging tour ride or mountain biking opportunities you won’t be disappointed by Knighton and its surrounds.

If you require any further information about the house, Knighton, or the surrounding area please contact us. We hope that you come for a comfortable, relaxing and environmentally friendly stay.

Location description

There are a number of very good reasons to come and stay in Knighton besides the local attractions based around walking and cycling. The town itself is steeped in history with half-timbered houses crowded round sloping, winding streets known locally as "The Narrows". Knighton retains many independent shops and services where you can buy everything from antiques, crafts and gifts to bread and milk or enjoy a quiet drink in a characterful inn. There is evidence of settlement in the Knighton area dating back to the Stone Age but the current town is mostly mediaeval in origin. There is a Town Trail that takes visitors around the places and buildings of historic interest in the town including a section of Offa’s Dyke and ‘Bryn y Castell’ – one of two Norman castle mounds in Knighton (the second is in a private garden).

The Offa’s Dyke Centre offers an attractive interactive exhibition that allows visitors to explore the Dyke, its associated long distance footpath, and the border area in general, through interactive displays and graphic display panels. The free exhibition covers the construction of Offa's Dyke, the Welsh Princes of the Anglo-Saxon period, the flora and fauna of the area, the history of Knighton and the maintenance of the Dyke and the National Trail. The Offa’s Dyke Centre also hosts the local Tourist Information Centre and a shop.
