Independent rural stonehouse with private pool and tranquil garden, sleeps 5 or 6 on the Greek island of Evia.

Situated at the end of a quiet earth road in the foothills above Karystos, is the Old Stone House, retaining many of the original features and feel while providing the conveniences of modern facilities. It is far away from any international tourism centres and provides a naturally quiet rural environment whilst being on the edge of a village and only five minutes drive away from the town. The position of the house provides wonderful views across farming land towards the sea. The house faces west and so the sunset is a daily spectacle.

The layout is unusual, providing a large kitchen, dining room and bedroom on the upper floor and two further bedrooms, the living room, two bathrooms with shower and toilet and a small atrium at the entrance level. 5 or 6 people can sleep comfortably. There is a large terrace with pergola on the upper floor, a small balcony outside the living room and an extensive garden with pool (4X5 x 1.3metres) and poolside pergola.

Location description

Karystos is a town set amongst the foothills of Mt Ochi in the southernmost part of Evia. A combination of island and mountain countryside, which overlooks the bay of Karystos and gazes at the Cyclades, creating a destination full of surprises and contrasts. A well-built town, with excellent town planning, beautiful neoclassical public buildings, mansions, traditional houses and a cosmopolitan lifestyle. A picturesque harbour with its jetty and a promenade shaded by rows of mulberry trees that will enchant the visitor who will be treated to the delicious delicacies offered by the many traditional cafes and ouzeries. Clean, endless beaches that stretch along the bay, some busy others deserted, which will satisfy any wish for swimming, partying, fishing, diving, sailing, watersports or romantic moments by the sea. The imposing massif of Mt Ochi, with wooded slopes on its north-east and a landscape typical of the Aegean on its south-west, is crossed by impressive gorges.

Other activities

The area is famous for walks, particularly the two-day trek up the mountain overlooking Karystos, Mt. Ochi (1.400 m), and down the gorge to the sea on the other side. There are also shorter walks to extremely interesting and beautiful locations. There is even a lovely “after dinner” walk from the house to the local mountain stream where there is a traditional plane tree copse, church and picnic area. There is the constant sound of running water in the distance. There are extensive and varied beaches within 5 or ten minutes drive. In Karystos Bay they are sandy and get deep after 5 or 6 metres. A little further away, on the western side of the island, they get deep after 50 metres. On the East, facing the Aegean and the summer meltemi winds, there are rollers and sand dunes and swimming gets exciting. Everywhere the water is crystal clear.

Local events

Karystos provides a comprehensive shopping center for necessities and all at reasonable prices. This is no tourist trap. The shops are for the island Greeks. The many tavernas provide a wide choice of eating out. The port is large, home to a serious fishing fleet, and there is an abundance of fresh fish, at a price. Most importantly, the locals are certainly friendly.
