Description of holiday house near Galera, Andalucia
Las Cavernicolas (which means "The Cavedwellers"), is a beautifully renovated, tastefully decorated, very comfortable cave house, nestled into the hillside on the outskirts of the village of Galera, Granada Province.
It has a spacious living room, with a galley kitchen, 2 bedrooms - one with double bed and the other with twin single beds, and a bathroom with shower, WC and washbasin. Outside, a terrace runs the length of the property and there is a barbecue, patio table and chairs and lounger chairs.
The cave is very well equipped and has an oven, hob, kettle, toaster, microwave, fridge/ freezer and washing machine.There is an outside clothes line and a drying rack.

Location description
If you want a change from the crowded costas, then this area will give you a taste of the real Spain.Galera is set in the beautiful countryside of the Altiplano region of Granada Province, where the dry dusty plains of Almeria give way to agricultural plains, forests and mountains and is in easy reach of the Castril Valley Nature Park, La Sagra Nature Park,Sierra Maria Nature Park and the Sierra de Baza. Lake Negratin is about an hour´s drive away and The Alhambra Palace in Granada just a 90 minute journey away.
Whitewashed,typical Andalucian villages dot the landscape and the rural customs and lifestyle continue almost unchanged......daily life is punctuated by the necessary chores and rituals of rural agricultural life and the age-old fiestas,the origins of which stretch back into the mists of time.
This is an area rich in archaelogy....it was one of the first inhabited areas of Europe. The museum in Galera is especially interesting and there are several archaelogy sites just outside the village.
Las Cavernicolas nestles into the hillside just outside the village and there are remains of an Iber-Romano settlement on the hill above.
The village swimming pool is open only in the summer. On the road to Orce, there is a wonderful freshwater pool and spring, where you can swim with the fish.......very refreshing on a hot day.Some of the local expats have started a custom for having a Christmas Day swim here!
Horse riding,cycling and walking are very popular in the area. It´s also a wonderful area for artists
There are several bars and restaurants in the village;also 2 banks, 3 supermarkets, 2 bakers and a butcher.There is a bodega, where you can buy the wine they make on the premises. Every Wednesday there is a market in the village square, and there is another, larger market in the nearby town of Huéscar (7kms) every Thursday.
Local events
Fiestas in all the local villages at various times of the year. Galera fiesta is the second week in August every year, the Moors and the Christians Festival is held at the end of April annually and there is a re-enactment of The Crucifixion at Cuevas del Campo every Easter.Tourist attractions

Directions
Budget airlines such as Ryanair fly into Murcia and Alicante Airports,from most UK airports.
From MURCIA AIRPORT, take the direction towards CARTAGENA and then follow the A30 until it joins the E15 motorway and the follow directions towards ALMERIA. After LORCA, look for the right turn onto the A92N towards GRANADA, at PUERTO LUMBRERAS. Continue on A92N for about 70 kms and then turn off at CULLAR. Drive through the village to the roundabout at the end and then turn right onto the A330 toward HUESCAR. After 20 kms you will reach GALERA.(Ignore the first sign for Galera via Caraterra Antigua).On arrival in village, please telephone the owner, who will meet you and guide you to the house.
From ALICANTE AIRPORT take the diections for ANDALUCIA (left out of airport) and onto the E 15 motorway, past MURCIA and then turn right towards GRANADA, via LORCA and PUERTO LUMBRERAS and then the same instructions as above from Murcia Airport.
It is best to hire a car at the arrival airport.
