Rock Cottage North Devon
(1/12)
Description of holiday house near Barnstaple, South West
This cosy rural retreat nestles into the shale rock on a lane leading out of Goodleigh village.
Inside you will find a recently renovated hand crafted kitchen. The work surface is natural slate, which not only provides an excellent, heat-resistant resting point for pots and pans but also complements the slate used elsewhere in the cottage (e.g. the original 17th century winding staircase, the hearth and the hall steps). The ‘self-cleaning’ electric grill/ oven, main oven and hob invite cooking of the simplest or most elaborate fashion (and there’s the microwave, too, for all levels of gastronomic skill). Modern down-lighting provides separate pools of light over work surfaces and the dining table.
With low ceilings throughout every room has a cosy traditional feel. The Living Room is traditionally furnished with a Laura Ashley sofa, wingback chairs (and featuring original wood-backed window seats) the room extends out from its original bread oven hearth (now with modern built-in wood burner) towards the oriental cabinet which holds the DTV, Freeview, DVD/ VCR and Hi-Fi with iPod/ headphone plug. There are games and jig-saws for old and young, and a portable table for Scrabble or cards. The heavy, exposed wooden beams add a sense of permanence, timelessness and warmth to this most comfortable and relaxing of rooms.
Up the narrow winding staircase you will find the Master Bedroom has a full King Size bed with pocket-sprung mattress for a really good night’s sleep. There is a full-height wardrobe with lower drawers as well as a chest of drawers for plenty of storage. The chest of drawers has its own fold-down writing desk/ compartment, ideal for writing postcards or storing the laptop. The rattan vanity desk and mirror offer homely touches to this inviting room.
The Bathroom is recently renovated with traditional stainless steel taps, mirror and accessories, offering a full-sized bath with optional shower facility, basin, handy storage shelves and WC. Its storage heater provides warmth and freshness throughout the year, whether you are returning from a dip in the sea or from an invigorating walk in the countryside. The over-bath airers and humidistat-controlled extractor fan help damp clothes to dry out at any time of day or night.
The second bedroom is a twin. The fold-under twin bed-set in sturdy, attractive beech-wood provides single or twin accommodation, for young or old, and can even form a ‘double bed’ if two couples are in residence. A half-height wardrobe with built-in chest of drawers provide ample room for all your packing and a matching vanity-desk with mirror and drawers gives extra options for writing, drawing or make-up, depending on age and inclination. The en-suite WC gives guests added independence.
Outside Rock cottage offers a pockets of Garden to suit all your needs.
From secluded off-road parking for 2 cars there are steps to either the front of the cottage or to the rear, a lower patio offers all-weather dining/ craft table with 6 chairs and twin sun-shades next to a raised flower bed or choose the
Upper patio with attractive rock garden, border, arbour and chairs, edged by a flowerbed perfect in spring and autumn for watching the sunset over the thatch.
Families and Friends are welcome!
Rock Cottage welcomes active adults (of more or less any age!), younger families (whose children will enjoy activities such as picking blackberries, in season, from the hillside) and couples in search of a private break away from the daily routine.
We are not equipped to accommodate hen or stag-parties. We cannot accept bookings from anyone under 21 years of age.
Privacy
Rock Cottage is set on the hillside of a quiet village, and offers both privacy and stunning views of the countryside.
Property Access
The age and structure of the cottage makes it unsuitable for those less mobile.
Security
Rock cottage is protected by a NACOSS alarm system with 24-hour monitoring, with easy “key fob” entry/ exit remote setting.
