Description of holiday guesthouse in Montblanc, Languedoc-Roussillon

Our home is in Montblanc which is a large village in Languedoc. We are only a few minutes from the Mediterranean with the mountains and lakes of the Languedoc National Park on our doorstep.

Our home is a big “Maison de Maitre” and we have made several apartments and suites for guests. It is very close to the center of the village and has private gardens and a sheltered Swimming Pool with plenty of space for sunbathing, terraces and a barbeque area.

The village of Montblanc dates back to Roman times. Our beautiful home is built of local stone and it is impossible to determine exactly when the first parts of our house were built. The main frontage is 19th century and was built as a “Maison de Maitre”, which is a home for a landowner or a professional person. We think our house was the home of a doctors family. Some parts of the house are much older and there have been many changes over the centuries.

Our Village, Montblanc, an old winegrowing village which is, not surprisingly, surrounded by vineyards. It is a busy village with a small weekly market and a full range of shops – 2 bakeries, a chemist, small supermarket, excellent butcher who also sells homemade pates, stews etc, Post Office, newsagents with foreign papers, and a bar which serves lunches in the summer months.

We have a good selection of restaurants within easy reach. The closest to us and which luckily happens to be one of our favourites is the newly opened L’Asparagus in Valros. This is only a 5 minute drive away by car. It has great atmosphere with lovely decor, spacious terrace and good service - and the food is pretty good too! Menus start at under 15 euros at lunchtime, there is an excellent wine list and their chocolate pudding is the best ever. Also nearby is La Grange Basse at Bessan, not far from the A9 Pezenas exit, and towards Beziers is the deservedly famous fish restaurant Barba. A 10 minute drive to Pezenas and Beziers gives you a wide choice – just ask us for further mouth-watering choices.
We can offer you an apartment, suite or private room in our home and you can share our gardens and private swimming pool. Breakfast is included in with the rooms and suites.

All main rooms and bedrooms have full air conditioning. There is also central heating which is needed in some winter weeks.

We hope you will be comfortable and happy here. We have added in lots of bits that we know we would need for a great vacation.

The following are available for all our guests:

- picnic equipment for days out on the beach or sightseeing, we have a cool box, an electric plug-in cooler, ice blocks and thermal bags, plastic plates and cutlery

Location description

So much on the doorstep……..

Transport / A9 and A75, airports at Beziers, Montpellier, Carcassonne, trains at Agde and Beziers

Art and history – from Pezenas, a modest sized historic market town with famed buildings and streets from its its 16th / 17th century heyday, to Carcassonne with its world famous castle, plus Roman sites of Arles and Nîmes and our favourite, the grandiose Pont du Gard. Art exhibitions at Lodeve and Montpellier, as well as many smaller galleries that seem to pop up everywhere

Shopping – our nearest towns of Pezenas and Beziers have a wonderful range of bars, restaurants and shops. Beziers offers everything from Galeries Lafayette in the main avenue, Paul Riquet, to tiny jewellery and clothes shops tucked into to the winding streets of the old city. Pezenas is famous even in France – which has a great tradtion of ‘artisans’ shops – for its wealth of individual creators who all take part in the summer ‘nocturnes’ – evenings when the whole of the old town stays open and busy until midnight.

Food – so much to eat ! so little time ! The fresh food available here is truly amazing thanks to the sunny climes, and the French tradition of good food means that small growers are still to be found here and supply the supermarkets as well as running their own stalls and outlets. This applies to fruit and veg and also to oysters which are raised locally here on the Etang de Thau which is bordered by a host of restaurants and shops selling the owners’ own goods. Cheeses and cheesemaking are also important here with many smallholders still running their own goat and sheep flocks – mainly in the cooler temperatures of the ricky hinterland – and their produce can be found in the great weekly food markets eg Pezenas, Saturday morning, and Clermont l’Herault, Wednesday morning

Wine – yum! more about this later …..

Scenery – sandy Mediterranean beaches, our favourite is La Tamarissiere, small and friendly and from here you can take the little passenger ferry over the river Herault to wander around the old fishing town of Grau d’Agde. Cap d’Agde is nearby if you like busy modern marinas, or we like the ‘French’ resort of Valras Plage with some nice beach shops and one of our fave restaurants. From Montblanc you can travel inland through gorgeous scenery to explore lakes and rivers which also offer swimming and watersports. A recommended place is Roquebrun on the river Orb,a very attractive town with a famous hilltop Mediterranean garden, well worth the climb, and on the Herault you can swim by the Pont du Diable – a Unesco wolrd heritage site, as is the nearby St Guilhem de Desert – a very pretty village that has grown up around the abbey founded here in the 9th century

Local Places of Interest
Our house is a good base for exploring with historic sites nearby – Carcassonne, the Cathar castles, Roman cities of Narbonne, Arles and Nimes – and attractive hinterland with vineyards, lakes and rivers.

We are only 25 kms from Cap d Agde with its marina and leisure parks, and there are Mediterranean beaches even closer to us at La Tamarissiere and Valras Plage.

There are weekly markets to visit at Pezenas and Clermont Herault, and oysters and other fresh shellfish to be sampled from the Etang de Thau.

Not forgetting of course the many wineries to be visited here, with many village co-ops and local producers happy to introduce you to their produce.

Pezenas and Beziers are both 15 kms away. We love them both – Pezenas for its wealth of artisan shops and winding 17th century streets, and Beziers for its grandiose cathedral – and also great shops ! Both put on extra attractions in the summer months – late night artisan markets in Pezenas and the famous feria in Beziers when for 4 days in August the whole town centre is given over to music and merrymaking.

The Roman cities of Nimes and Arles are also worth a visit and the Pont du Gard is a definite must. For 9th century history try the Unesco site of St Guilhem le Desert.

Gentle touring around the villages and vineyards of the Herault is very rewarding. The town of Roquebrun on the river Orb has a river to swim in, a hilltop Mediterranean garden to admire and some great wine to taste. Cathar country is also within reach including the splendidly positioned Queribus. The Canal du Midi is on the doorstep.

There is a whole host of cultural and social activities and fetes going on, more especially in the summer months of course , but also in the quieter seasons. We try hard to keep up to date and make sure our guests do as well. This year we have enjoyed modern dance in Montpellier, a classical concert in the Abbaye de Valmagne, brilliant opera in the bullring in Beziers, a Mucha art exhbition in Montpellier and several photographic exhibitions in local wine domaines – with some wine tasting too.
