Le Vieux Cafe, exterior shot
(1/15)
Description of holiday gite near St Jean d'Angely, Poitou-Charentes
Renovation of Le Vieux Café, a village cafe and garage, has been in keeping with the cottage’s history – simple and understated – revealing original fireplaces, beams and stonework where appropriate. The furniture is a mixture of old and new and the cottage has lovely warmth, with comfy sofas and snugly duvets, but also a contemporary feel with simple furnishings and lots of space.
The front door leads into a farmhouse style kitchen, with an original fireplace and a table which comfortably seats ten. The contemporary kitchen has an endless wooden work surface, modern appliances and, for music lovers, speakers which can be plugged into any ipod, laptop or MP3 player. On one side of the kitchen a double door leads to the snug – a bright, comfy room with a variety of indoor and outdoor toys for children – and also the second bathroom, with power shower. On the other side of the kitchen is a spacious and cosy living room with wood burner and small library. The TV, DVD and video player picks up all usual freeview UK TV stations, but please bring your own Sky card if you would like to watch Channels 4 and 5. The library holds a number of books, board games and videos, which you are welcome to borrow.
Moving up to the first floor from the living room, the long upstairs hallway has restored stonework, old beams and original wooden floors. The spacious, master bedroom has a double bed and quaint original windows with views over the little orchard opposite. Next to this a second bedroom, with comfy double bed. Then a large bathroom with free-standing bath and separate power shower. And finally a bright and airy third bedroom with twin beds suitable for children and a bunk bed too. There is also a travel cot available, which fits into all three bedrooms. And a camp bed, if required. All bedrooms come with wardrobe, drawer space and wall mirror.
A second staircase directs you back downstairs into the snug, where patio doors lead out onto the sunny patio and decking area. Here you will find plenty of seating and a barbeque. The large patio area is surrounded by a mid-height wall, double gate and single gate, safely enclosing it for small children, but leaving plenty of room for outdoor games. Opposite the decking is a charming little "orchard" with cherry, apple, peach and fig trees. It is quite a higgledy piggledy garden, but children love it, and feel free to help yourself to any of the fruit in season.
If you have any queries while in St Pardoult, our housekeeper is available by ‘phone and lives only 10 minutes away from the cottage.

Location description
St Pardoult is only 10 minutes away from the bustling, medieval market town of St Jean d'Angely. With its royal abbey, cobbled alleys, timber-framed facades and tiny squares, it's easy to spend an afternoon in St Jean, lingering on a cafe terrace or exploring the many activities at the lake.
The long sandy beaches of Chatelaillon-plage and Fouras, both near the beautiful port of la Rochelle, are less than an hour away. Not to mention the idyllic islands of Ile de Re, Ile d'Aix and Ile d'Oleron, which are well worth a day trip if you can spare the time.
And for those looking for an active holiday, St Jean also boasts an impressive indoor pool with water slide, go-kart race track and mini golf; in nearby Aulnay there is an outdoor pool, Loulay has tennis courts for hire and the nearest golf course is in Niort.
The scenery surrounding St Pardoult is simply breathtaking, with fields of yellow rapeseed in spring and brilliant yellow sunflowers in summer. Sleepy villages, winding rivers and inviting market towns abound and, with the airports of la Rochelle and Angouleme both accessible in around an hour, is the ideal base for a relaxing, short break or indulgent summer holiday.
Welcome to the warm, sunny micro-climate of Charente Maritime, the ideal holiday destination for all ages.
Other activities
If you have children, there are numerous half day activities nearby, including the poitou donkey farm, Zoodyssee in the forest of Chize, Paleosite for budding palentologists in Saint Cesaire, a school museum in Vergne and miniature boats in Saint Savinien.
Local events
Throughout the summer, there are, amongst many others, musical events, theatre, cycling and hot air ballooning to be enjoyed, either as a participant or spectator.
Tourist attractions
For the wine buffs amongst you, as well as cognac, the Charente is also home to a sweet aperitif wine, Pineau des Charentes and there are numerous opportunities for wine touring and tasting between St Jean d'Angely and Cognac.
