Description of holiday gite in Sauze-Vaussais, Poitou-Charentes
Le Roitelet, converted from what was originally the farm baker's cottage, has retained a number of original features, creating a charming gite. It benefits from full gas central heating, making it ideal for winter lets.
The lounge is separate from the kitchen/dining room, comfortably furnished with traditional oak furniture and has exposed beams & a tiled floor. There is a CD based hi fi system, & a TV/DVD player is available if required. A French door leads to the courtyard patio with table & chairs. From the lounge, a lovely hardwood staircase leads to the first floor, with window looking across the courtyard.
A large beamed farmhouse kitchen with exposed stone walls overlooks the private garden. It is well-equipped with cupboards and comes complete with matching crockery, cutlery, pots,pans & all necessary utensils for your stay. Amply fitted, it has a washing machine, large fridge freezer, microwave, and family size gas cooker with oven & hob
The dining area boasts a solid pine table and chairs, floor standing wine rack for acquiring your favourite local wines, and a delft wall rack.
On the first floor there is a fully tiled, modern shower room which comprises full door opening shower with generous 90 cm tray, white toilet and mirrored basin, toiletries storage and large heated towel rail.
The master bedroom has exposed beams and chestnut flooring, and is a lovely large bedroom with views across the courtyard. The antique pine suite comprises a king size bed, wardrobe, bedside cabinets, dressing chest, cheval mirror and floor standing towel rail. Across a small landing area, next to the bathroom is a triple bedded room, again in pine with solid bunk beds and a single bed. A bedside cabinet and wardrobe complete the setting.
The third bedroom, if required, is an en-suite room on the ground floor. The bedroom has a double bed, upholstered in the french style, and has matching cabinets, dressing chest & wall mirror and a large wardrobe. The en-suite shower room is fully tiled and of wet room design, complete with toilet, mirrored hand basin, cabinet and heated towel rail. Being on the ground floor with wet room shower and extra width doors, this room has been particularly appreciated by our guests with disabilities.
Le Roitelet enjoys a private garden, with barbecue, table and chairs and a courtyard patio, also with table and chairs. The 10 x 5 metre, fully terraced pool is fully fenced with security gate to comply with current safety standards. The generous sun-bathing terrace comes complete with sun-loungers. Within the garden grounds, in excess of 3 acres, there are a number of magnificent trees, several of which pre-date the house.
Wildlife abounds in the area, & you will certainly see birds of prey, rabbits, hedgehogs, game birds and red squirrels. You may be fortunate enough to see badgers, foxes and deer.
Swings with rope & rope ladder, slide and a number of ride-on toys are available for the younger guests, whilst table tennis and table football can be found in a covered games area adjacent to the pool. Badminton/volley ball, a netted trampoline and petanque are available, and bikes can also be hired.
Wifi internet access is available to our guests on site, free of charge.

The 10 x 5 metre pool is surrounded by a sun terrace with sun-loungers, and has secure fencing and safety gate, complying with current legislation. There are some magnificent trees and shrubs within the grounds, and you will certainly see a variety of bird-life as well as red squirrels, rabbits, hedgehogs and deer. A covered games area houses a table tennis table & table football, along with a number of smaller ride-on toys to suit our younger guests. There is a badminton/volley ball area, swings with rope/rope ladder, petanque etc. The quiet country roads are ideal for a leisurely stroll or bike ride. Close by are tennis courts and an outdoor swimming pool, with the local plan d'eau ( a leisure area with fishing lake, children's playground, snack bar, boules court, picnic tables and barbecue ) just a few miles away. |

Location description
Close to all amenities, Le Roitelet is just outside the small market town of Sauze Vausais, which has the usual facilities e.g. 2 pharmacies, doctors' surgery, 2 boulangeries, small Spar shop, pizza restaurant/take-away, hotel/restaurant, garages and large supermarket with petrol station & car wash. There is a weekly market on Thursday.A local ferme/auberge provides excellent food from farm-reared meat and other local products.
The local plan d'eau with its fishing lake is a popular spot for visitors, well-supplied with picnic tables & barbecues, it also has a boules pitch, children's play area and snack bar .
Other activities
There is an open-air swimming pool, tennis courts and mini-golf in Sauze Vaussais. Riding stables are just a few miles away.Golfers have a choice of good courses within the region, and the nearby Charente river, delightful for picnics and bathing, provides excellent kayakking for the more adventurous.
There are a great many tourist attractions in the Poitou-Charentes, but perhaps one of the most popular is the Vallee des Singes, where you come close to primates in natural surroundings - only 8 miles away.There is the well-known Futuroscope theme park at Poitiers, and a water park at Angouleme and Saintes.
Local events
During the summer, there is always something to enjoy in the region. The Melle festival 's street theatre, with singers,dancers acrobats, story-tellers etc provides daily attractions, along with evening concerts,.In September the annual Vintage Car rally takes to the ramparts in Angouleme & draws the crowds, and there are always farmers' markets, fairs and brocantes/vide-greniers at local towns throughout the year.Tourist attractions
There are a great many tourist attractions in the Poitou-Charentes. Attracting a great many visitors, the Vallee des Singes is perhaps the most popular, appealing to all ages. There, you can spend the day viewing a large number of primates in natural surroundings.Futuroscope is a very popular theme park, and it is always advisable to plan to stay and watch the evening spectacular.
The Atlantic beaches are within easy reach, with Chatelaillon & Fouras always popular. The delightful Ile de Re with its beaches, harbours, excellent seafood restaurants, and quaint streets can be explored via the road bridge or if you prefer why not visit Oleron by ferry?
Zoodyssee, situated in the Chize forest, features European animals, or you may prefer to visit the donkey sanctuary at Dampierre and view the original Baudet Donkeys.
There is a large leisure lake at Lambon where you can try a variety of water sports. www.lelambon.com.
The Marais Poitevin, or Venise Vert, is an excellent day out where you can hire one of the flat-bottomed boats and enjoy the maze of waterways. Alternately, you may prefer to hire a bikes or even explore the peaceful countryside on foot.
The Silver Mines at Melle provide yet another popular tour. There are also some impressive Romanesque Churches in the town, and an interesting arboretum walk. A short distance away, at Celles sur Belle, is the impressive Abbey. The region does not lack for impressive architecture or archaeological sites.

Directions
Situated only a few miles from the excellent N10 road, a major north-south trunk road, Le Roitelet is very well placed, whatever your travel plans. Excellent motorways make journeys from the ferry ports straightforward, and there are 5 airports within an easy drive, where you can arrange car hire. Budget airlines operate from each one - Poitiers, La Rochelle, Angouleme, Nantes & Limoges.
NB - Flybe has introduced their summer timetable to Limoges, & now serves more UK airports.
The TGV fast speed train offers an alternative, with stations at Ruffec and Poitiers.
