Description of holiday gite in Rocles, Rhone-Alpes
The Mas de L'Elze is a rambling collection of old stone buildings, clinging to a sun-drenched, south facing slope on the edge of the Ardechois Cevennes. In the past, these buildings served a multitude of purposes typical of the local countryside: a silk-worm loft, a drying and smoking area for chestnuts, a barn for storing hay and raising geese and ducks for the "gavage". Now, they have been painstakingly and lovingly transformed into a set of completely independent luxury houses, from which you can fully appreciate the beauty and tranquility of the surrounding countryside.
There are three gites at L'Elze. Two - La Clede and La Magnanerie - are small, open plan houses for 2/4 and 2/3 people respectively, while the third - La Grange, is a larger house which sleeps 6-8. All are completely independent and have private terrasses for al freso dining. For large groups it is always possible to rent a number of the gites together.
All houses share a large 15x5m swimming pool and jacuzzi and gym. The gym features a treadmill, cross-trainer, bike, stepper and rower and a multi-gym weights machine.
A wireless ADSL connection is available in all the gites.
We have an organic vegetable garden so fresh produce is always available. In addition, we provide evening meals when required - can be very good on the night that you arrive.
La Grange is a house on two and a half levels for six to eight people. It is the original barn of the mas; the goats had only just left the bottom floor when we started restoration!
The entrance at road level leads into the kitchen and dining area, with a shower room behind. Above, there is a large mezzanine with two single beds. The living room, with a magnificent view towards the Tour de Brison in the south, is through a stone archway from the kitchen. For larger parties there is a very comfortable double sofa-bed. Just in case you choose to take our holidays out of season, there is a large fireplace for the long winter evenings.
The two main double bedrooms are downstairs, where the goats used to be! There is also a luxury bathroom and a "cave" complete with washing machine.
Outside, there is a large stone-paved patio with a walled flower garden; it is fully equipped with furniture and a BBQ.

Location description
The closest town to the Mas de L'Elze is Largentiere, dating back to medieval times, retaining its walls, gates and ancient winding cobbled streets. En route from there to Aubenas, you will find Balazuc, designated one of the most picturesque villages of France. The Tour de Brison, dominating the countryside to the south of L'Elze, has an interesting wartime history.
The majestic gorges of the Ardeche, famous for their natural beauty, are a short drive away. Closer by are the valleys of the Beaume, Drobie and Chassezac, less well-known, but no less beautiful. The mountain range of the Tanargue forms a backdrop to the setting sun in the west. An unusual natural phenomenon to be found nearby is the Bois de Paiolive, a labyrinth of white rocks eroded into strange and fantastic shapes.
You can enjoy the countryside while relaxing in the sun with a glass of local wine; alternatively, should you wish to get a little closer to nature, many opportunities for horse-riding, mountain-biking and hiking are available in the region. Canoeing is very popular and bathing (or fishing?) in the clear, cool local rivers is a pleasure not to be missed.
There are many caves to see in the region including Aven D'Orgnac where there are often son et lumiere events.
Day-trips to Orange, Avignon, Nimes are within easy reach as are vists to the Cotes du Rhone villages where you can sample the famous wines.
