Description of holiday gite Poitou-Charentes
One of the most impressive features of La Chouette has to be the large glazed entrance, opening into the vaulted lounge - some 6 metres in height and featuring the impressive original oak timbers. Overlooked by the minstrelīs gallery with views over both garden and courtyard, it is a wonderfully light living space, and reveals some magnificent oak roof timbers and beams. It has been thoughtfully planned to ensure guestsī comfort.
You enter the lounge in La Chouette by way of a floor to ceiling height glazed entrance doorway which floods the living area with natural light. Here there is comfortable seating for up to 8 people and it is well furnished with pieces of oak furniture typical of the region.The impressive vaulted atrium, overlooked from the first floor by the galleried landing, displays the impressive original oak roof beams, as well as exposed stone walls. The ground floor area is fully tiled and here in the lounge boasts an attractive decorative frieze.
The dining area has an oak extending dining table with 8 upholstered dining chairs. A glazed french door leads out onto the courtyard patio.
The kitchen is generously equipped with ample work surface and cupboard space. It contains a large fridge/freezer, full size gas cooker with 4 burner hob and oven, washing machine, dishwasher and microwave, along with matching crockery, cutlery, pots and pans,and all necessary kitchen utensils.
There are 2 bathrooms, one on the ground floor and another on the first floor. The ground floor bathroom is of wet room design, making it also suitable for guests with disabilities It comprises shower, hand basin, wc, storage cabinet and heated towel rail, along with fully tiled walls and non-slip floor tiles.
One of the double bedrooms is also on the ground floor. It is a twin-bedded room with large wardrobe and prettily co-ordinated furnishings. Along with the ground floor bathroom, this would obviously be suitable for less able guests.
Three further double bedrooms are on the first floor, approached by way of an attractive hardwood staircase and overlooking the ground floor from the minstrelīs gallery, with two windows giving views across the courtyard. There are two well-appointed rooms with double beds & one bedroom with twin beds. All contain oak furniture typical of the region, giving ample wardrobe space, bedside tables and lamps and no shortage of exposed roof timbers. They each have wall-mounted elecctric heaters. The bedrooms and landing are enhanced with beautiful chestnut floors, and have views across the garden and grounds.
There is a second bathroom on the first floor, which has a corner opening shower, mirrored vanity basin with light, wc and heated towel rail. It is also fully tiled.
La Chouette has a private garden, barbecue, table and chairs and a courtyard patio also with table and chairs.
Wifi internet access is available to guests on site, free of charge.

Roman steps lead into the water at the shallow end, and tables, chairs and sun loungers are provided on the generous sun-bathing terrace. Using a salt water system, ( yet with no salt taste ), lack of chlorine ensures swimming without those stinging eyes. Within our 3 acre grounds, there is a variety of shrubs and trees a number of which pre-date the house. Wildlife abounds in the area, you will certainly see birds of prey, rabbits, hedgehogs, game birds and red squirrels. You may be fortunate enough to see badgers, foxes and deer. Swings with rope and ladder, slide and some pedal toys for younger children are available on site, whilst table tennis and table football are situated in a covered games area. There are many peaceful country lanes where you may enjoy a cycle ride or leisurely stroll. |

Within our 3 acre parkland setting is a variety of mature trees and shrubs, a number of which pre-date the house. Wildlife abounds in the area, & you will certainly see birds of prey, rabbits, hedgehogs, game birds and red squirrels. You may be fortunate enough to see badgers, foxes and deer.Swings with rope and rope ladder, some pedal toys & a slide for younger children are available on site, whilst table tennis and table football are situated in a covered games area. There is a netted trampoline, badminton, volley ball & petanque, or you can hire bikes.
Other activities
There are tennis courts and an open-air pool in Sauze Vaussais, whilst on the outskirts of town is the plan d'eau, a leisure area with fishing lake. It has picnic tables & barbecues, children's playground, boules court and snack bar.A few miles away there are riding stables, and there are many delightful country lanes for walking & cycling.
One of our favourite spots is on the River Charente, where we like to take a picnic. It is safe for children to paddle in the shallow water, or if you're feeling adventurous, you can enjoy kayakking.
Vallee des Singes is recommended by all our guests - an absolute must, and only 9 miles away.
Local events
There are some excellent markets, selling fresh local produce, and the larger ones with livestock. You can try a different one each day of the week!Should you be with us on July 14th, don't miss the Firework display by the lake at the plan d'eau. Arrive early, choose a good spot & take a picnic.
Many towns and villlages have brocantes/vide greniers throughout the summer, always interesting to rummage.
The Melle Festival hosts a variety of interesting entertainment, from street theatre, story-telling etc to jazz festivals and concerts.
Arboretum walks, also in Melle, may be of interest.
Tourist attractions
The nearby "Vallee des Singes" has to be one of the best attractions in the area. It will appeal to all ages and makes a good day out.Futuroscope at Poitiers is a theme park worthy of a visit. We recommend that you plan to stay for the evening spectacular.
Also close, a leisure area at Prailles - Lambon - where you can try your hand at a variety of leisure pursuits in a safe environment.
The Silver Mines of the Frankish Kings at nearby Melle give a very interesting tour. Museums, arboretum walks and some interesting architecture in the splendid Romanesque Churches in the town make it well worth a visit.
The Chateau de Javarzay at Chef Boutonne will give guided tours and has a very interesting museum featuring ladies' bonnets of the region. There is also a leisure area with fishing lake.
The Atlantic coast and the towns of La Rochelle, Rochefort & Royan are within easy reach. The beaches of Chatelaillon & Fouras being ever popular. The Ile de Re is easily accessible with the road bridge link. The little harbour at St Martin de Re has some excellent sea-food restaurants, and along with the impressive fort, it is worthwhile taking time to explore the narrow streets there. If you have the energy to climb the church tower, you will be rewarded with excellent views.
The Marais Poitevin, or Venise Vert, comprises a maze of waterways where you can enjoy a ride on one of the flat-bottomed boats, or hire a bike to explore the villages of Coulon, La Garette etc.
The donkey sanctuary at Dampierre-sur-Boutonne will be a favourite with the younger children, & is not far from Zoodyssee, in the Chize forest, where all the family can enjoy looking at European animals.
Cognac makes an interesting visit, with a choice of tours at the well-known distilleries, e.g. Martell, Courvoisier & Hennessy. The old town is worth exploring, too.

Directions
La Chouette is situated on the ouskirts of the market town of Sauze Vaussais, only 5 miles from the excellent N10 road, linking north to south.
It is a straightforward car journey from all major ferry ports, with excellent motorway connections.
Should you prefer to fly, using one of the budget airlines such as Ryanair, Easyjet, Flybe, Jet2 etc, we are within reach of no less than 5 airports - Poitiers, Angouleme, La Rochelle, Limoges and Nantes. Car hire can be arranged at the airport.
NB Flybe has introduced a summer timetable to Limoges serving even more UK airports.
The fast TGV train operates excellent services, with stations at Ruffec and Poitiers.
