Description of holiday gite near Cognac, Poitou-Charentes

The property has been newly renovated from an old stone barn and retains much of its original features. There are exposed stone walls and beams in the living/kitchen area, which is delightfully light and airy. The bedroom is downstairs and hence beautifully cool on those hot summer nights. There is also a very modern shower room on the ground floor.

The gite has a private balcony, with table, chairs and sun umbrella, overlooking the garden, swimming pool and the surrounding vineyards.

From a door in the downstairs corridor, you enter a private, decked courtyard garden which is the perfect place for lazing in the sun with a glass of wine and a good book. There are two sun loungers and a parasol.

Guests have use of a large heated pool (shared with the owners). All around the pool are sun loungers and shade is provided by umbrellas and a large pergola with grape vines growing overhead. The area faces almost due west and is bathed in sunshine for most of the day. The pool is illuminated at night for a late evening swim. There is also a covered eating area in the main garden and access to a barbecue.

Elsewhere in the owners' barn there is a washing machine and tumble dryer for guests' use.

Location description

Segonzac is in the heart of the cognac grape growing region. There is a small supermarket (open on a Sunday morning) in the town, 2.5km from the property). Larger hypermarkets can be found on the outskirts of Cognac. Cognac old town is delightful. There are narrow, winding, cobbled streets to stroll around, perhaps finishing the tour with a picnic on the riverside. The Charente river passes through Jarnac, just ten minutes away, where you can hire canoes or take a leisurely trip down the river. The immediate surrounding area is undulating and ideal for walks through the vines. Cognac houses abound throughout the area and visits can be arranged should you wish to sample, and possibly purchase, some of the excellent cognac or pineau (a local speciality) produced in the area. There are also many Romanesque churches throughout the area.

Other activities

There are many festivals which take place around the Charente area, particularly during the summer months. Cognac is home to the famous 'Blues Passion' in July and musical events take place throughout the town during that period.

A myriad of events take place during the summer and information from the local tourist office in Segonzac will be provided for visitors.

Tourist attractions

The coast is about an hour's drive away, as is Aubeterre with its amazing monolithic church and the vineyards of St Emilion are about 90 minutes away. Summer days are usually long and hot as the region has its own micro climate.

Directions

Easily accessible from the channel ports, via Rouen, Le Mans, Tours and Poitiers. The journey takes about 8 hours, including a brief stop. There are four airports nearby, Bordeaux, La Rochelle, Poitiers and Limoges, all within about 1hr 40 minutes' drive. Angouleme Station, for the TGV, is about 40 minutes' drive. The TGV links to Eurostar at either Lille or Paris (change of stations is required if taking the Eurostar to Paris). All the airports and Angouleme station have facilities for car rental.
