1  Owners / Advertisers / General Discussion / Urgent Scam Update on: June 03, 2014, 11:16:37 AM
Hi all,

As also posted in the Security section.

Scam Update - 02/06/2014

Urgent Warning:

We have recently been notified of a scam where advertisers have been contacted by phone and offered a discount to feature their property or a deal on professional photographs. This is somebody pretending to be from theholidaylet and they are NOT from our company. Even though they may sound convincing and have your name or property reference number, please DO NOT make a payment or give out card details to anyone over the phone - it is a scam. We do not offer a professional photography service. If you wish to feature your property, do so by logging into your account.

If you have received a call from this person or persons, please let us know.

They're good ideas Mila, though we would need to add them to the Help section so people can find them in one place. Is there something you'd like to start with?

That's either someone who is oblivious or has a wicked sense of humour.

Thanks for the suggestion KC - I'm going to impose a slightly stricter policy with posts which don't really serve a purpose. I mean, if someone wants to reply to one of your posts with "I like Kendal", then I'm going to allow it but will note the post and the user.

I've also started a bit of a cleanup and removed a topic from another section as it contained one blatant spam post and no worthwhile content. Hopefully we can strike a balance which gives us fairness and good content.

Regarding your other question - you can have up to 300 characters for your sig, so you should be fine to add another link or 2, within reason.

Thanks Kendal,

Don't worry about the link - it's a site with appropriate and useful information and we've no problem with that. If you want to stick it in your sig then feel free.

It would be nice to see some forum activity and real discussion, so here's hoping.

Sailing close to the wind, but nothing harmful really.

It's not interesting or useful, but it's a democracy and if there's no obvious ulterior motive then he's fine to stay. We're all for fairness  Shocked

Hi Kendal,

A lot of our time is spent listing adverts - well when I say "our", I mean Liz, as she continues to get them on.

I'd say we've had about 12 months in reality to let the site bed into the serps - we changed it so much during the first 2 years even we lost track at times. We rebuilt the search system completely (twice), which meant that our url's changed etc. We were a bit worried about the panda algorithm with duplicate content, but we're probably positioned a bit higher than previously, if anything. The local search has pushed the other results down but I suppose everyone is in the same boat there.

Google's not perfect by any means but we learn to live with it. We had a website copy content from us a few months ago and post it verbatim on their own site. That content then appeared above ours when searched.  Angry It's no big deal though, they'll be gone soon - it's that sort of site.

We're sure that development is the key - we had a quiet time in 2011 - apart from fixing what was broken we didn't do much at all. This was party financial but not entirely.

We've just agreed some major development which should help though - don't want to go into it in detail just yet, but we're adding sub-regions to the site search. It should have some obvious benefits in the serps as well as improve the search facility greatly. We'll aslo be moving to a paid service at or around the same time, so this year is going to be exciting  Smiley

As for social, not really. It's an area where we'd need to engage properly for it to work and we don't have the time at the moment. We'd rather put effort into building more content and improving the site.

Now that's a nice way to get a website link in  Wink

I posted the banned user info as a warning really - we'd been having a few problems and I'd banned half a dozen users for similar activity. Since I posted the last one we've had less, so maybe it's proved to be a deterrant.

9  Owners / Advertisers / Help / Re: Multiple units question on: April 25, 2012, 11:26:22 AM
Hi Katz,

Thanks for the info - it's a good point. We'll review the wording and will amend as necessary.

Thanks again,

To be reviewed:

"If you want to advertise more than one property in the same location:

If your properties are similar and have the same Postcode/Location then they can be listed on the same advert, otherwise we recommend that you create a separate advert for each property. For example: a B&B and two self catering 1 bed Apartments would need two adverts - one for the B&B and one for the Apartments. Properties are found on the search by either Self catering (capacity) or Catered. If you list all properties on the same advert they will only be found by one set of search criteria.

If you want to advertise more than one property in different locations:

If your properties have different postcodes/locations, you MUST create a separate advert for each. Each property is plotted on our Google map search with its own pin according to its postcode/location. If your properties have different postcodes/locations then you must create a separate advert for each one. You can link your properties together once they are live using the links section below."

Hi Katz,

I have answered your question in the Help section - please contact us if you need any help at all with the changes.

Hi Katz,

Sorry for the late reply - I have been otherwise engaged for the last few days so I missed your question. I do (usually) monitor the forum regularly.

In answer to your question; at the moment, yes, if you wish to have separate availability calendars then you will need to create another advert. We can then change the original advert as required.

Multiple units is something we've looked at and agreed that we need, but we have other development planned first (I'll go into this in the appropriate section on the forum).

Please contact either myself or Liz via the site contact form if you need any help at all with changing your advert.

Hi bluehouse,

In this case the user spammed the thread with inappropriate links. I removed the content and the user.

That's one way to get banned. There are plenty of others  Smiley I have left your posts because you haven't strayed outside of our terms and conditions. Please try to ensure that your posts are useful to the forum, rather than one sentence with very little substance. Please PM me if you would like some guidance.

Hi Kendalcottages,

It does feel that way doesn't it? I've let Bluehouse's posts stay because while they're not exactly fascinating, they're not crossing any lines and there's no link spamming.

No, we didn't hire them - we haven't got any money  Cheesy

Hi all,

The site was down yesterday, from early afternoon until just before midnight. Our site host experienced a major server issue and our site had to be restored from backup.

Although it was inconvenient we can look at it positively in that a major problem was resolved within 1 day - it gives us confidence in our hosts at Rackspace and our developers at www.9xb.com. Well done both.

Salut Rosa,

Meilleurs voeux,

Craig www.theholidaylet.com

Hi Rosa,

Thank you for creating an advert and for your enquiry regarding the main image not displaying correctly.

The black image can sometimes be an error in the upload or an image format which cannot be recognized. I have removed this image and added all of your views from the images on your own website. I’ve chosen one of those as the main image, but you are welcome to re-order your images and choose another. This can be done by using the blue up / down arrows next to each image and then saving.

Once you are happy with your advert please submit it for approval.

Please let me know if you need anything else.

Best wishes,

Craig at www.theholidaylet.com
