Description of holiday finca in Santa Clara a Velha, Central / North Mountains
Owned and managed by extrovert ex-pat Frank, this property, hidden away in a mature fruit and flower garden, has ten en-suite bedrooms overlooking mosquito-free Santa Clara Lake.
Most of the delicious home-made meals are served in a wonderful dining room that seems to hang above the organic garden stretching down to the warm, clear waters of the lake and the conversation around the dinner table, made easier by the extensive wine list, is lively and interesting.
The surrounding countryside is ideal for walking while the lake offers one the chance of boating or swimming, but, amongst the many activities on offer at the Quinta, such as Swedish or Shiatsu massage, the one not to miss is surely a nature walk with the owner; Frank is an ornithological guide for the whole of southern Portugal and his love, knowledge and enthusiasm for the countryside where he’s lived for over 20 years is addictive.
Nearby, Santa Clara village itself is quiet, clean and beautiful and the inhabitants friendly. The local roads are mainly traffic-free and in good condition, ideal for those wishing to explore nearby localities such as the Plains to the east or the coast to the west.
The property is isolated and quite hard to find without detailed directions, so please make sure you visit the Quinta’s site to download these before leaving home.

Location description
The Quinta itself is set in a beautiful lakeside location in central Portugal.
The surrounding countryside is a patchwork of Cork oak forests, ("Montados"), and self-sufficient homesteads, small farms and eucalyptus forests. It is in a wonderful birdwatching area and the Quinta's owner is a Birdwatching Guide, running guided birdwatching trips throughout the year covering the whole of Southern Portugal.
Sailing or canoeing - they're both included in the price of your stay, (as are bicycles and the sauna), and the views over the lake bring a new surprise every minute.
But it's not just nature and water lovers who benefit from the Quinta's geographical location in this sparsely populated region - the roads of the area, with beautiful sweeping curves and very little traffic, bring motorcyclists from all over the world and the Quinta's staff are always on hand to promote their favorite rides!
Other activities
The Quinta really is an ideal place for a break away from it all. With plenty of space all around you and a total absence of man-made noise it's the perfect venue to unwind on a holiday break whether you bring children or not. With various activities and specialists in residence you'll always have something to interest you if you want to be active, and space for peace and quiet if you wish to chill out.
There are Well Being courses with accredited therapists, and a resident Shiatsu masseuse is always on hand and willing to smooth away those city stresses even when the Quinta's not running a course; of course the Quinta's sauna, close to the lake, is very much in demand!
Local events
Santa Clara Market every 3rd Saturday of the month.
Tourist attractions
The lake, right on your doorstep and one of the largest in Europe, (with an average summer temperature of 82ºF), is a refreshing, (and unpolluted), change from the sea, but for those who like beaches, the Algarve, as well as the spectacularly unspoilt West Coast, is only an hour away.
Though close to the Algarve, it's relatively unknown, with a busy day being the sight of over five boats, and in the summer the Quinta's mature fruit and flower gardens lead guests down to the shore where a variety of watersports are on offer, overlooked by the lawns close to the water's edge.
