Location description

Our hamlet rests on a low plateau surrounded by rolling hills covered in woodland, olive groves and vineyards. From the garden one can see the ruins of 4 castles, a reminder of Umbria's turbulent past. The views from the garden are wonderful, but so too are the walks which one can take from our hamlet in the surrounding countryside.

Within minutes from our door wild boar roam the woods at night yet we are less than 30 minutes drive from the bustling town of Perugia.

Our nearest town, Tavernelle has a wide selection of supermarkets, banks, cafes, places to eat and a small local market on Mondays.

There are many wonderful ristoranti in the neighbouring towns and villages serving traditional Umbria dishes. We also have a gourmet ristoranti on a hill near the house.

We are located in the center of the area settled by the Etruscans and there are numerous archeological sites, tombs and structures, as well as museums to visit.

Vecchia Casa is in the area where Perugino was born and worked He died and is buried in a chapel in our neighbouring village. His works may be viewed in a number of local churches and the gallery in Perugia.

In the Basilica of St Frances in Assisi you may view the incredible series of frescos by Giotto and paintings by other notable artists.

Arezzo over the Tuscan border is home to the famous fresco cycle, the Legend of the True Cross by Piero della Francesco.

Other activities

Mountain biking is popular and bikes may be hired in Tavernelle 8 minutes by car. Our hamlet is the start for many wonderful walks of various lengths.

Umbria is renowned for its potholing

Nearby Lago Trasimeno has a bird sanctuary for migratory birds.

Local events

Throughout the year there are many festivals either to celebrate a religious event or a harvest. The religious procession of the crosses during Easter in Panicale is very beautiful.

The harvest festivals celebrate everything from olive oil, chestnuts, mushrooms to chocolate and snails. Meals are available and often music and dancing. They are very traditional events and fun to watch and to participate.
