    Description

    Les Hiboux consists of a fully restored 18th century farmhouse and three cottages, all with limestone walls and tiled roofs in the Charentaise style. The property is situated in a small tranquil farming hamlet with outstanding views, in rural Poitou-Charentes, 5 km from the market town of Chef Boutonne.

    The Farmhouse, L’Hibou, accommodates 10 guests in four bedrooms on three floors. On the ground floor is a large fully fitted kitchen with flagstone floors, a functioning wood-burning stove in the original fireplace, and a beautiful pine table which can easily seat ten. Across the hallway, the living room has three large comfortable sofas and an entertainment centre with satellite TV, VCR, and DVD. This room also has a wood-burning stove which keeps the place very cosy in cool weather. A door leads out onto the terrace and garden. There is also a shower room on the ground floor.

    The house has four bedrooms, all en-suite. On the middle floor there are two double bedrooms. One of these bedrooms has an ensuite bathroom with a bath and bidet; the other has an ensuite shower room. Both bedrooms have great views over the garden and surrounding countryside. On the top floor are the two other bedrooms both with ensuite shower rooms. One has a double bed and a single bed, while the other has three single beds. These bedrooms have been well restored, retaining the building’s character, with exposed oak ceiling beams. Both rooms have round "porthole" windows overlooking the garden and courtyard.

    Each of the houses has its own terrace, with patio furniture for “al fresco” eating and there is a communal barbecue area. The homes look onto the courtyard, which is at the end of a short driveway and has plenty of parking space.

    In the 3 acres of enclosed gardens, at the back of the properties, there are picturesque views of the surrounding countryside. The 4 properties share a 5mX10m swimming pool. It has steps leading down into the water and is surrounded by a terraced area which is ideal for sunbathing. For safety, the pool is surrounded by a wall with a lockable self-closing gate.
    In the formal area, trees and flowerbeds surround a gated and fenced pond, and there is a boules pitch.

    There are a great many activities on site for both children and adults. A games room is available just off the courtyard, with table tennis, table football, a pool table and outdoor sports equipment. There are two fields, the first of which has a children’s area with swings, a slide, football goal posts and a large sunken trampoline. The lower field is left as a wildlife habitat, with a pathway cut around the perimeter, which leads to a children’s cabin.

    Location description

    Les Hiboux is situated in the hamlet of Crezieres which is a 10 minute drive to Chef Boutonne with all necessary amenities. Chef Boutonne 5km. Melle, Brioux-sur-Boutonne and Sauze-Vaussais all 20 mins. Niort for major hypermarkets and commercial centre, 40mins. It is just over an hours drive to the city of Poitiers, which has a great range of shops and Futuroscope, the theme park of the moving image. Vallee des Singes is an excellent day out for younger families; it is about 45 minutes drive. Tours are available of the silver mines at Melle, 20 minutes away. It is an hour and a half to the city of La Rochelle, which has a large marina and a great aquarium. There are many excellent beaches near La Rochelle, especially those on Ile de Ré. The town of Cognac, home of brandy producers such as Remy Martin and Hennessy, is also within a 60-minute drive. The Marais Poitevin has a labyrinth of canals which can be explored by boat. The weather in this region is exceptionally good, benefiting from the microclimate of the Vendée coast, which has France’s second highest number of sunshine hours per annum after the Côte d’Azur.
