Description of holiday farmhouse in Brossac, Poitou-Charentes

Vignes des Perches provides a relaxing and comfortable base for a holiday that will provide plenty of variety for young and old alike whatever their interests. The farmhouse’s location in south Charente on the edge of the Dordogne is a perfect base from which enjoy a variety of activities including walking, bird-watching, cycling, horse riding, fishing, canoeing, tennis, golf, river/lake swimming, quad-biking, jet-ski, llama trecking, wine tasting, boat excursions and market browsing. Fun for all can be had at a ‘Centre Parcs’ type complex newly opened at Jonzac 20 mins away. There are many historic landmarks and towns to visit: the monolithic church at Aubeterre, Brantome - a ‘little Venice’, various chateaux, the caves at Lascaux.

Charente enjoys a microclimate that provides the second highest number of sunny days after the south of France. This is a beautiful part of France which is why this will become our home on retirement. Sunflowers are in abundance as is the wildlife. We have had a barn owl roosting in the garage and buzzards soar through the valley below. Lizards crawl lazily up the walls and hares meander through the garden. The wild flowers are varied and numerous.

This is wine country and many of the chateaux in the Bordeaux region give tours and tastings. Tours of the Cognac houses are a very popular way to spend a day. Pineau, a local aperitif, is sold throughout the region from farmhouses. Of course it is very easy to buy the food to accompany the wine. All the local towns have weekly markets which provide a true taste of France. A wide choice of restaurants are waiting to serve you if you want to eat out.
There is a file in the house containing masses of information on things to see and do and ideas for days out. Guests are invited to make recommendations for others.

The room is warmed by the boiler.
Outdoors:	Swimming Pool, BBQ, Private garden, Terrace, Sunloungers, Patio table, Patio chairs, Sunshade The swimming pool was installed in 2003 and has a movement sensitive safety alarm system, it measures 9m x 4m. On the terrace leading from the French windows there is a large table with umbrella and seating for 8 to take advantage of the views that surround the house. There are sunloungers for around the pool. Plenty of space to kick a ball around or ride bikes. Outside games - badminton, boules, swingball, bats, There are two long washing lines around the back with a marvellous view when you're pegging out.

Location description

The farmhouse is only an hour from the historic city of Bordeaux. Close to the Dordogne border, all the delights that can be found there are readily available. Forty minutes away is Cognac where you can see the manufacturing processes at first hand - and taste a few samples! The beautiful town of St Emilion is under an hour away. Medieval Angouleme is another place well worth a visit, as are the roman ruins in Saintes The famous theme park Futuroscope is approximately an hour and a half away.

Other activities

The farmhouse is only an hour (by car) from Bordeaux and from the pine backed, sandy beaches of the Atlantic which are very popular with surfers and sailors. These are all long and sandy and when near towns, such as Royan, have various organised activities and places to hire equipment.
There are various golf courses within easy reach - Aubeterrre (one of the prettiest villages in France) where there is also a swimming beach and canoe hire (approx 25 mins), and Cognac which is a little more challenging (approx 40 mins) Further details can be found at the house.

Local events

Each summer there are night markets in local villages and towns where local produce is sold and everybody sits down together to eat what they have bought off the stalls to the sound of a local band, Each August Chalais has a horse event which is very popular.

Directions

Bordeaux is the easiest airport to travel from as the N10 takes you as far as Barbezieux and there are at least two flights a day and good car hire. At present there is only an evening flight into Angouleme.
When traveling by car from Calais the best route is via Rouen on the motorway. This is a pretty drive and takes about 7 hours without stops.
