Location description
Torgon and the surrounding area are packed with things to do.
In the village are an outdoor swimming pool and tennis courts - both open all summer and available for a small charge.
For hire are bicycles and horses. You can also go parapenting, where you throw yourself off the mountain suspended from a lilo...
Torgon is part of the Portes du Soleil skiing area. Lift passes are available in the village for the entire Portes du Soleil region – the largest linked ski area in the world. Ski lifts are about 250 metres away, and you can hire all ski/snowboard equipment - and have lessons - locally.
In the village there are a couple of restaurants, and a popular local bar. There is also the amazing local shop which seems to cram everything you could want into a very small space - and also stocks lovely local delicacies and fresh bread.
Tourist attractions
This is just the most beautiful part of the world. Half the fun is doing your own exploring, of course, but some of our favourite things to do are shown above.
There are the fabulous historic paddle-steamers that go up, down, around and across Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) all year round, with extra services in the summer - including dinner cruises and firework-viewing cruises.
A statue of Freddie Mercury stands forever on the waterfront at Montreux - home to the famous jazz festival every July. Freddie, Charlie Chaplin and Audrey Hepburn all lived nearby (although not together, of course).
The magnificent Chateau de Chillon - only one of several lovely properties in the area, many with their own vineyards and sampling - hic! (Swiss wine is so good that they keep it all for themselves, so you have to come here to try it.)
There are several thermal baths in the valley, including the one at Lavey pictured above - perfect for unwinding.
And what could be more Swiss than the lovely mountain trains? You can go up almost impossible gradients in these, and there are many special routes with glorious views and special destinations (do try the "Chocolate Train"...). You can get special tickets that include the boats and the trains - excellent value, and such a pleasurable and relaxing way to explore the region.
We supply renters with a several page document with all these tips and more, to help you get the very most from your stay.

Directions
The village of Torgon is about 5 miles south of the eastern end of Lac Léman (aka Lake Geneva or Genfersee), close to the French border in the Portes du Soleil ski area. The nearest town (signposted from the motorway and main roads, and with a mainline railway station) is Aigle in the Rhone valley. If you’re using a satnav, the postcode is CH 1899.
You can fly direct to Sion airport (only 20km from the apartment) from Stansted with Snowjet, from December 2011 to April 2012: www.snowjet.co.uk/timetable.asp
There is something called the “Swiss Transfer Pass”. This is a transport ticket that you have to buy online from outside Switzerland, and it allows you to get from any airport to any Swiss destination and back again at the end of your stay. It usually works out very good value. In this instance, it means you can get from Geneva Airport by train to Aigle, and then by post bus from Aigle railway station to La Jorette, the actual resort where our apartment is. Then at the end of your stay, you go back by post bus to Aigle and train to the airport. No other travel is included, and you must buy this ticket outside Switzerland – you can’t get it at the airport once you arrive. Just Google ‘swiss transfer ticket’ or buy it at your local train station.
By car from Aigle, go straight across the valley to a little town called Vionnaz. Then follow the signs up the mountain – the signs will say Torgon and Portes du Soleil. Keep going up for 11km to the village of Torgon and after about 1km follow the sign and take the left fork down to La Jorette.
