Situated in a small building with lift access and brand new in 2010, this modern, duplex apartment forms part of an old mill conversion and enjoys stunning views across the Gironde Estuary and Mortagne harbour. It offers the perfect holiday rental for couples in the Charente Maritime, France.
Mortagne-sur-Gironde is a small, enchanting and picturesque port with the Gironde Estuary beyond, enjoying a wonderful backdrop of white, chalk cliffs. The nearest sandy beaches are just 15 minutes away by car at Meschers sur Gironde and there are restaurants just a few steps along the harbour.
Royan and St. George de Didonne are approximately 25 minutes by car, with La Rochelle and Bordeaux approximately an hour.
The Apartment: is South facing, and is located on the 3rd and 4th floors, with lift access. It commands stunning views to the front across the harbour, estuary and marshes, particularly in spring and autumn when the trees are not in leaf, and across the estuary to the rear. We accidentally stumbled on Mortagne in 2008 whilst on holiday, and instantly fell in love with the very typically French ambience; we bought the apartment to use as our own holiday home, not as a commercial venture, and it has been tastefully equipped and furnished with this in mind. Everything was brand new in 2010.
The living area is comfortably furnished with two sofas, one each to spread out on, and incorporates a dining area with table and chairs. There is underfloor LED lighting in the dining area,(see below) giving a tasteful ambience.
The ground floor is open plan with a newly fitted kitchen with 4 ring hob, microwave oven/grill, fridge with small freezer compartment, George Foreman grill, toaster and plenty of kitchen equipment. With such an awesome array of restaurants to choose from there is simply no need for a full size cooker! The cupboards are stocked with a good selection of basic provisions which you may need; herbs and spices, cooking oil, salt and pepper, and a selection of other items which you are free to use.
Stairs lead to the spacious bedroom with a very high, beamed ceiling; the bedroom has a nautical feel, with a new, king sized bed with comfortable mattress.
There is a very modern, en-suite bathroom, which is fitted with a washing machine, wc, basin, and a hydro-massage power shower with seat, and lots of storage space. The washing machine is located in the main bathroom, and for your convenience, there is a downstairs WC with handbasin.
The floors throughout are either tiled, natural wood or laminate, giving a clean, modern feel.
In sympathy with the building's heritage and protected status, there isn't a balcony, but every morning and evening you'll still want to swing open the windows at the front and take in the delightful views across the estuary and cliffs. Your "garden" is at the front, anywhere along the river, or on the grassed area, shaded by trees, where there is also a small cafe/bar which serves light snacks and a 'plat du jour' in the summer months.
Because the apartment is located in the top corner of the building there is no pedestrian traffic past the door, so this enables guests to sit out at the rear, where there is a small table and chairs, to take in the wine and drink in the sunset and spectacular views!
There is secure parking at the rear of the building
Along the quay, you will find 2 restaurants catering for most tastes, especially seafood. There is also a Pizzeria and Creperie, where you can have both sweet and savoury dishes. During the summer months, you can buy fresh bread, croissants, pain au chocolat, pastries, fresh fruit, fish and vegetables.
