Description of holiday cottage near Ravenstonedale, Lake District / North West
Sandbed is a four star visit England Cottage, a delightful mix of old and new, with exposed beams, stone work and flagged floor, the furniture has been carefully handpicked to provide charm and character along with all modern conveniences. The downstairs living place is open plan with a log burner (starter pack included in tariff) digital TV, DVD and a fully equipped kitchen. The upstairs is reached by a handmade oak staircase onto a gallery sitting area from which there are 2 good sized bedrooms, one with a double bed and one with 2 single beds. There is also a spacious shower room with WC, basin and large quadrant shower cubicle.
Sandbed Cottage nestles at the foot of the slopes of Harter Fell part of the spectacular Howgills, with the stunning limestone pavements of Fellend Clouds just a short walk away. These little known hills and fells are grazed by Swaledale sheep and wild fell ponies, with Buzzards soaring over head and the call of the curlew carried on the breeze.
Sandbed Cottage is ideal for a good strenuous walk or horse/bike ride up breathtaking Wild Boar Fell or a gentler meander along the valley bottom whichever you choose the scenery is breathtaking!
Sandbed Cottage is situated in a perfect position for exploring the area, it is only 7 miles from the book town of Sedbergh and 3 miles from Ravenstonedale, a lovely little village with two pubs serving restaurant and bar meals. There is a children's playground in Ravenstonedale and some Gilbertine ruins in the grounds of St. Oswald's church.
The ancient market town of Kirby Stephen is just seven miles away and sits at the head of the Eden Valley and on Alfred Wainwrights coast to coast route, the area also offers river fishing on the Eden, Belah and Lune, horse riding, golf and the famous Settle-Carlisle railway is nearby. A little further afield are the fells, lakes and mountains of the Lake District and the stunning landscape of the Yorkshire Dales both offering plenty of attractions.

Location description
Sedbergh is a small town nestling in a valley at the foot of the Howgill fells. It is becoming increasingly famous as for its annual book festival. Sedbergh is an ideal base from which to explore the Howgill Fells, a compact cluster of hills rising to about 2,000 feet about 40 square miles in area between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales.The picturesque village of Ravenstonedale lies in an area of outstanding natural beauty, while the surroundings are idyllic and offer visitors peace and tranquility.
The nearest market town to Sandbed Cottage is Kirkby Stephen, about 7 miles away, where there are a variety of pubs and restaurants offering good dining.

The Settle-Carlisle railway, reputedly the most attractive line in the UK, winding its way through some of the finest scenery in Britain, trains can be boarded at Kirkby Stephen.The ruin of Pendragon Castle, built in the 12th century and reputed to be the place where Uther Pendragon, King Arthur's father died.
Smardale Nature Reserve is located near and the countryside within the reserve is idyllic and wildlife is prolific.
St. Oswald's church in Ravenstonedale, rebuilt in 1744, is famous for it's three-decker pulpit and its collegiate, in-facing pews.
The Lake District National Park with its wealth of mountain and lakeland scenery and associated activities is within easy driving distance.

Exit at J37 and take the A684 to Sedbergh. From Sedbergh take the A683 towards Kirkby Stephen. After approximately 7 miles Sandbed Cottage is on the left.
From A1
Take the A66 west from Scotch corner to Brough. Turn south at Brough on the A685 towards Kirkby Stephen. Continue through Kirkby Stephen. After about 2 miles turn left on the A683 signposted to Sedbergh. After approximately 5 miles Sandbed Cottage is on the right.
