Description of holiday cottage in Ravenstonedale, Kirkby Stephen, Lake District / North West
You won't find an old cart in your kitchen, but that's where it would've been stored in Victorian times! Not that it was a kitchen then, of course, but an essential part of a working barn.
The Carthouse is one of three luxury cottages in a high quality conversion of our magnificent Victorian stone barn, set in the grounds of The Green, Ravenstonedale, once a farm. All the cottages have recent inspections from Visit Britain, with 4 and 5 star ratings and Gold Awards.
The Carthouse is on three levels, with the living accommodation on the ground floor, and the three double or twin bedrooms above. The kitchen has everything you need to produce a tasty meal from the excellent local ingredients, with separate double oven and halogen hob, separate fridge and freezer and everything you'd expect, including a dishwasher so you don't have to wash up on holiday, and a washer/dryer for your laundry. Of course, there's a microwave for a quick meal, and an electric crockpot so that you can have a casserole ready when you come back from a day out.
A large breakfast bar divides the kitchen from the dining area, which will comfortably seat eight, but if you fancy eating out for a change a mile away in the village are two pub/restaurants including the winner of the AA UK Pub of the Year Award for 2012, and the village shop, with more to choose from a little further away.
The lounge is furnished with three comfortable sofas.
There's a log burning stove in case you want to supplement the underfloor heating, or just because you enjoy the ambience that a real blaze gives - especially at Christmas. Naturally there's a flatscreen TV, DVD player, iPod dock and WiFi internet access.
A door leads out from the lounge to your own enclosed courtyard area which has a table and chairs, and where you can smoke if you wish. The fenced and gated courtyard makes The Carthouse ideal for guests wishing to bring well-trained dogs - we have dogs ourselves, and understand the problems of finding top quality accommodation!
The final feature of the ground floor - apart from the entrance hallway with lots of boot and coat space - is a wetroom with good shower, toilet and washbasin and fitted for wheelchair use.
All three bedrooms, two on the first floor and one up a further flight, have six foot wide beds which can be arranged as doubles or twins, so The Carthouse is popular with groups of friends as well as families, but still cosy enough for one couple. By renting all three of our cottages, we can accommodate groups of up to 14 adults.
The large master bedroom has a washbasin, and as well as the ground floor wetroom there's a bathroom on the first floor with a whirlpool bath with a good shower over.
We hope you'll appreciate the thought that has gone into The Carthouse, and indeed our other two cottages The Byre and The Haystore, but we always welcome any suggestions!
Whether you want walking, mountain biking, fishing, sightseeing, photography or wildlife there's plenty of scope in the immediate area, and we can help with arranging horse riding and mountain bike hire locally. The village has a tennis court and golf course, with another golf course in Kirkby Stephen. And if you feel like simply relaxing, you'll enjoy the facilities and views from our grounds, where Red Squirrels are daily visitors. Smaller and generally much shyer than the greys that have largely supplanted them elsewhere, these delightful animals still survive locally, although extinct in most parts of the country. Get your camera, and be patient!
Wainwright's book on the Howgill Fells will help you with local exploring and The Yorkshire Dales and The Lake District are both within easy reach.
We hope to be able to welcome you to Green Barn Cottages, and it's important to us that you enjoy your stay in this lovely part of the Eden Valley!
