Description of holiday cottage in Penela, Costa de Prata / Silver Coast
A two-bedroom, beautifully restored stone cottage with jaw-dropping views, at the end of a quiet country lane - only the forest lies beyond. All you are likely to hear are birdsong and the gentle rush of the cascades.
The 'tropical' gardens are truly magical, conceived to simulate an Asian garden, and bordered along c. 120 metres by tumbling waterfalls. Wander along little winding paths past giant rocks, little terraces, a fish pond, a little Chinese pagoda, a Japanese-style soaking tub in a walled garden, and of course the 12-metre private pool. This draws water from a spring-fed stream through 600 mtrs of black tubing in the sun. The water is normally deliciously warm, and free of chlorine. The foot-friendly shingle on the floor further simulates a local river.
The house is fully equipped with fitted kitchen, cooker and hob, microwave oven, fridge/freezer, satellite TV, DVD, CD, coffee-maker, toaster, all utensils and a generous welcome hamper. Downstairs is a bedroom with adult bunk beds. Upstairs is the double bedroom with veranda (wonerful views) and fully tiled shower room.
Oil-filled electric radiators in every room. Outside is a large patio with sun loungers and barbecue. Free use of mountain bikes, petanque court and washing machine in outhouse.
May be rented together with separate one-bedroom cottage just 35 metres away. All towels and linen provided.

This is a little forgotten paradise, unspoiled by mass tourism. Verdant hills and valleys, crystal rivers and lakes (a delight to swim, and much safer and warmer than the sea), picturesque towns, the vast golden beaches of the Silver Coast, the medieval university city of Coimbra, World Heritage town ofTomar, the Roman ruins at Conimbriga, absurdly cheap restaurants, empty roads, locals who really don't hate the English!
