Description of holiday cottage in Paunat, Aquitaine
'La Mangeoire' at 'La Borie Haute'
Wednesday changeover
La Mangeoire is one of two cottages created from the original 200 year old farmhouse and barn, next to our home 'La Borie Haute' which was the original Pigeonnier.
We overlook the village of Trémolat some 1.5kms away, which is itself situated on the banks of the Dordogne River. On the edge of the small hamlet of Gréze, rolling countryside, valleys and woods surround us, with superb views and where bird and wildlife abounds. The access road to us serves only the hamlet with minimal traffic; it is a very peaceful location.
La Mangeoire has on the ground floor a large open plan living room with feature fireplace and original beams, a separate dining area next to a large fitted kitchen with oak units. The kitchen is fitted with a gas cooker with electric grill and rotisserie, extractor hood, refrigerator with freezer compartment, dishwasher and ample storage facilities. There is also a WC. The ground floor is fully tiled, with French windows opening onto the terrace at the front and overlooking the swimming pool at the rear.
On the first floor, which is fully carpeted, there are two double bedrooms each with beamed ceilings. The smaller bedroom benefits from an en-suite fully tiled shower room, with WC and vanity unit, the second bedroom has a separate fully tiled shower room again with WC and vanity unit. Showers are thermostatically controlled and there are heated towel rails in each shower room. Both bedrooms have fitted wardrobes.
The cottage is furnished to a very high standard, mixing the best of French & English furniture and fabrics, blending well with the original features and creating a light airy and spacious ambience. Complimenting this is a range of quality glass & chinaware. The cottage has central heating if required, and a water softener.
There is a shared 11x6m heated swimming pool set in a large attractive garden with wonderful views on all sides.
The following are all provided: - Pool towels, sun loungers, recliners, table & chairs, cushions, parasols, 4 bicycles and BBQ plus charcoal & firelighters - All linen, towels, towelling robes, hair dryers, bedding, electricity, gas, constant hot water, welcome pack of local produce and wines.

Location description
There are so many places to visit while staying here but below are listed a few of our favourites.'Domme - 45km'
"Very popular village which is again very pretty and the views from the top over the Dordogne River and Valley are spectacular. When you get there you may recognize the bridge across the river as it has been well photographed!"
'La Roque Gageac - 40km'
"A very pretty village on the edge of the Dordogne River. A trip on a gabarre (flat bottom boat) from here is well worth it. Looking at the village and châteaux from the boat is fantastic and you may see the odd kingfisher as well."
'Marqueyssac Gardens - 37km '
"Beautifully kept gardens mainly box topiary but with many other interesting plants. You are free to walk through the gardens and there is a viewing platform some 130m above the river with wonderful views. There is also a small château with a "lauze" roof which you can visit, although only a few rooms are open to the public. At the end of your walk around the gardens there is a 'salon de thé et glacier' for refreshment while you take in the view."
'Monpazier - 42km'
"One of the best preserved Bastide towns in the Dordogne, it is lovely to sit in the square and just take in the surroundings, especially in May and June when the roses give a wonderful display over the buildings."
'Sarlat - 44km'
"Lovely medieval town with some good examples of 'lauze' roofs and the architecture is beautiful. There are markets here on Saturdays and Wednesdays which are very busy especially in July and August - but worth the experience. However to appreciate Sarlat better we would suggest you went when the market wasn't on! There are some good restaurants here, but be careful with your choice!"
**Our favourite restaurants and there are many more!**
'Restaurant - Chez Julien - Paunat'
"Lovely local restaurant in a superb setting. Service and food are both very good and Julien does speak English if needed! Good varied menu including vegetables which can be rare in some French restaurants. Only 6km from here although in the same village!"
'Restaurant - Le Bistrot d'en Face - Tremolat'
"Owned by Le Vieux Logis this is a good restaurant with plenty of local dishes of good quality."
'Restaurant - Le Vieux Logis - Tremolat'
"Relais and Château Michelin starred hotel restaurant. Beautiful setting. Ideal for that special meal in the evening. The best value is their 'tapas' lunchtime menu, weekdays only. Around 36€ per head for 9 small courses! None of our previous guests who have eaten there have been disappointed! Only 1km from here walkable during the day but a bit dark at night."
**A sample of a few local markets**
'Market - Issigeac - 41km'
"The Sunday morning market held in this very pretty village is well worth visiting. A very busy market where the smell of chicken, pork or quail cooking on the spit is in the air wherever you go! The atmosphere is wonderful with small stalls selling fresh picked stawberries and raspberries or mushrooms or asparagus whichever seems to be in season to large stalls selling a choice of fruit and veg. The colour of the market is truly alive here. Before you leave don't forget to buy your spit roast chicken 'avec jus' so you can have lunch back here with a nice glass of wine, perhaps also bought at the market!"
'Market - Lalinde - 13km'
"Held on Thursday mornings. Very lively market spread out over the whole town. The smell and sound of the market will undoubtedly tempt you to try the odd piece of cheese or saucisson or partake in some wine! Or perhaps the lovely bright tablecloths will catch your eye."
'Market - Le Bugue - 14km'
"Held on Tuesday mornings this is one of the best local markets. Stall-holders selling most things from duck, foie gras, fresh veg, cheeses, saucisson to clothes, hats etc. There are also local craft stalls and artists. While wandering around you may be tempted by the smell of crepes cooking or perhaps the Chinese stall! To top it all there is the best fish stall we have come across in these parts."
'Market - St Cyprien - 26km'
"Another Sunday morning market, very lively with whatever you could wish for in local produce."
There are plenty of other places to visit including chateaux, caves gardens and there is a water sport centre in Tremolat.
Other activities
Walking, cycling and plenty of wildlife and bird lifeLocal events
May is the time for flower markets and a wonderful strawberry market in Vergt.During July and August there are plenty of night markets to eat at usually with live music, there is one on somewhere every night of the week and are very popular.
