    Description

    OUR HOLIDAY COTTAGES
    We have fifteen self catering holiday cottages on our beautiful 350 acre farm, with acres of woodland and marvellous views to the Northumberland coast and Cheviot Hills. The holiday cottages, set in landscaped gardens in the middle of the estate, are all of an exceptional standard.

    Beacon Hill has won more awards for quality than almost any other similar business in England. We are the only business to have reached the final of England's Self-Catering Holiday of the Year on three occasions, and the only one to have won this prestigious award twice, in 1991 and 2000.

    We won North East of England Self Catering Holiday of the Year 2006. This was the fourth time we won this award, having entered four times!

    Each holiday cottage is fully equipped with everything one could possibly need, including colour television, fan-assisted and microwave ovens, dishwasher, washer-drier and deep freeze. All have central heating, masses of books, colour television, radio, quality pictures and prints, comfortable chairs and superb views; most even have log fires. All cottages have a CD player, and you can access your e-mail by WiFi in the reception using either your own laptop or our computer and printer.

    Our holiday cottages are all graded either 4-Stars or 5 Stars.

    QUARRY HOUSE
    A single-storey sandstone building with a slate roof, Quarry House is a second farmhouse for Beacon Hill and a superb choice for a luxury self catering holiday in Northumberland.
    Designed to take full advantage of the magnificent southerly and westerly views, Quarry House is situated in its own grounds and is totally private, yet is situated only a minute's walk through the gardens to the other cottages.
    The centrally-heated accommodation comprises one double bedroom, two twin bedrooms and two bathrooms, one with a bath and both with power showers. All the rooms are large and the kitchen at 18 ft x 16 ft is no exception. The spacious drawing room has two 12 ft windows, one facing west and the southerly one opening on to a large, paved terrace.
    Furnished with antiques, original oil and watercolour paintings, and shelves of good books, this is a house of the highest quality, an ideal retreat for the discerning guest who demands the very best in self-catering accommodation.

    WILLOW COTTAGE
    New in 1999, this is a stone built, three-bedroom, self catering holiday cottage with a slate roof. It is beautifully situated in a quiet position, facing south and west, with lovely views across the rolling Northumbrian countryside.
    The sleeping accommodation comprises a double bedroom and a twin bedroom, both with ensuite shower rooms, and a further twin bedroom. There is a large bathroom with bath and bidet. The cottage is very spacious and has a large lawned garden and superb views.
    Willow Cottage has been awarded 5-Stars by English Tourism Council.

    BEACON HILL COTTAGE
    This is the original farm cottage at Beacon Hill, with marvellous views to the south and west and a private garden. It provides superb self catering holiday cottages accommodation for a family holiday in Northumberland.
    The sitting room has an open fire and well-stocked bookshelves. Both this room and the kitchen open out into an exceptionally large double-glazed conservatory containing both seating and dining areas.
    The downstairs bathroom contains a cabinet power shower, while upstairs there is one double bedroom, two twin bedrooms and a bathroom with bath. There are masses of books and pictures as well as a CD player and radio. The cottage has full central heating.

    CURLEW COTTAGE
    Curlew Cottage is a contemporary, stone built, self catering holiday cottage with a Welsh slate roof. It is situated in an open site to the west of the existing cottages, set on its own, along with Kestrel and Merlin Cottage. All three cottages enjoy wonderful uninterrupted views across the fields to the distant hills and moorland of Northumberland and they all have spacious gardens and terraces.
    Curlew has a double bedroom with en-suite, a twin bedroom with en-suite and a third twin bedroom. The spacious family bathroom has a wc, bath and roll-in power shower.     Beautifully situated, with its own private south-facing terrace, Beech Cottage is perfect for a luxury self catering family holiday in Northumberland.
    The accommodation upstairs comprises a spacious dining room / kitchen and a superb sitting room with a large arched window to the west and further windows to the south.
    Downstairs is a double bedroom, two twin bedrooms and two bathrooms, one with a power shower en-suite with the master bedroom.
    There are masses of books and pictures as well as a CD player and radio. The cottage has central heating and a wood fire.

    SOUTH GRANARY
    South Granary offers luxury self catering holiday cottage accommodation in Northumberland.
    South Granary has commanding views to the west from the sitting room and the double bedroom. There is a double and two twin bedrooms and a bathroom on the ground floor. Upstairs, there is a bathroom with power shower, bidet, wc and wash basin.
    The kitchen has an alcove dinning table. There are two fridges, a freezer, microwave and washer dryer, as well as a fan assisted oven. The kitchen window has views into Beacon Hill Wood.
    The sitting room has over 50 feet of books and, as in all the cottages, there is a tv, DVD and CD player / radio. Sunshine pours into this lovely room in the morning and afternoon through windows looking into Beacon Hill Wood and towards the lovely western view - a wood burning fire completes the picture!
    South Granary has been awarded 4 Stars by English Tourism Council.

    NORTH GRANARY
    North Granary is an upside down self catering holiday cottage, with the sitting room, dining area and double bedroom taking advantage of the vaulted and beamed ceiling. It makes a great base for a family holiday in Northumberland.
    Downstairs, there are two twin bedrooms and a bathroom with power shower. Upstairs, the sitting room has a light and airy feeling with views across the wooded gardens. The wood burning stove, books, lamps and pictures combine to make this a very atmospheric room.
    The kitchen has a full range of appliances, with two fridges, fan assisted oven and microwave. There is also a deep freeze and washer dryer.
    The double bedroom has a king-size bed, a vaulted ceiling and an ensuite with wc and wash basin.
    North Granary opens on to a sheltered south-facing courtyard with tables, chairs and a barbecue.

    Location description

    Beacon Hill Wood
    Beacon Hill has been a settlement for thousands of years. Evidence of an Iron Age camp can be seen in the ground surrounding the cottages. Beacon Hill Wood is a prominent local feature and the hill and the wood can be viewed for miles around. It is only 200 yards from the cottages to the entrance to the wood. Younger guests enjoy completing the Harry Potter Trail, which runs through the wood and has given much pleasure to children of all ages over the years.

    We are very lucky to have 40 acres of private woodland on our doorstep and we have recently planted 900 new hardwood trees to ensure its continuing survival.

    The local ornithological club have put up a lot of nest boxes in the wood, and you will often see bird watchers in the avenue as it is one of the best places locally to see many of our summer visitors. Almost 90 bird species have been recorded at Beacon Hill. In addition, you will see red squirrels and badgers if you are lucky. Roe deer are also regular visitors.

    Beaches of Northumberland
    When staying at Beacon Hill Farm on a luxury self catering holiday near the coast, why not sample some of Northumberlands finest beaches? The beaces and coastline in Northumberland is some of the most spectacular in the UK.
    Unlike many parts of Britain, there are still uncrowded, room-to-breathe and unspoilt beaches in Northumbria - often stretching for mile after mile, with hardly a soul in sight. Check out thiswonderful coast with beaches, some of which were voted, in a survey conducted by the National Trust, among the 50 best beaches in the UK. Our region excels in great beaches and Embleton was voted the best beach in the Britain! I can only think that it was an error of judgement that caused Bamburgh and Druiridge Bay to be omitted. Maybe they didn't want too many beaches in one county!

    Other activities

    Beacon Hill Spa

    The Spa is open from 7.00 am to 10.00 pm every day of the year. It is a large building in a wonderful location located just a short walk through the grounds from the holiday cottages. There are a wide range of treatments available at the Spa. The pool is heated to 30 degrees and there are tables and chairs in which one can enjoy a complimentary tea or coffee. There are six showers and two loos in the building and three different rooms in which one can relax. In addition to the changing areas, we have two dedicated baby changing rooms complete with everything a parent might need.

    Our outdoor leisure facilities include ...

    ... an Adventure Playground - younger children will love this large, covered adventure area; with its wood chip flooring, this is a safe yet exciting area for the younger child.

    ... the Tennis Court is a green en-tout-cas court, which is available from dawn till dusk. It is south facing and sheltered and is playable all year round.

    ... the Games Room is a large, heated room next to the pool. Equipped with table tennis, pool, bar football and a lounge area with colour TV, this makes a great meeting place for children of all ages (allowing their parents to enjoy the Spa in peace and quiet).

    ... Riding is available at Kimmerston Riding School near Wooler (telephone 01668 216283). It is possible to go on beach rides on the sands at Lindisfarne - this is a superb experience! Slate Hall Riding Centre in Seahouses (telephone 01665 720320) have a varied selection of horses and ponies and can offer lessons and treks suitable for both novice and experienced riders. Riding times can change daily, so please telephone in advance to book your ride. In winter, riding is usually available only in the mornings and weekends.

    ... the Cricket Net has a green hard surface and has proved popular with children of all ages. We also have a cradle slip catcher, although most guests think it is either a deck chair or 'something to kill sheep in'!

    ... the Football Pitch is situated to the west of the gardens. 'Look, Dad, there are proper nets!' is the usual comment. Why this is so unusual, I am not sure, but many aspiring David Beckhams seem to have fun between the posts.

    ... the Croquet Lawn seems to provide a location for many friendly arguments - mainly about the rules!

    ... the Trampoline is 12 feet in diameter and seems to be a magnet for children of all ages.

    ... the Harry Potter Trail in the 20 acre Beech wood adjoining the gardens is great fun and is something the whole family can enjoy - and there are prizes for those indomitable souls that complete it!

    ... Fly Fishing at Meg's Lake is an idyllic pastime. Our guests are welcome to fish on our beautifully located two-acre lake, which is set within a 20 acre nature reserve established on the farm in 1997. The views from the lake are breathtaking and, as one guest remarked, 'One is surrounded by birdsong and tranquillity.' The lake is stocked with rainbow trout and may be fished all year round.

    Travel Directions
    If you are coming from the north use the A697, the Coldstream road. The A697 starts south of Edinburgh, off the A68. The A697 runs through Coldstream and Wooler to Longhorsley.

    Turn right immediately one enters the village, turn left for Stanton 350 yards later, then drive 1 mile to a cross-roads. Turn left, travel half a mile up hill then turn right to Beacon Hill. Take the second drive and drive to the top.

    If you are coming from the south follow the signs to Morpeth on the A1, then turn onto the A697 north of Morpeth (do NOT go into Morpeth).

    After half a mile you will pass a large garden centre, Heighlygate Nurseries. Two hundred yards past the nurseries take the left turn which is signposted to Beacon Hill. It is very easy to overshoot this turn and end up in Longhorsley!

    Once you have turned off it is two and a half miles up hill to the farm. Follow the signposts. Take the second drive on arrival at Beacon Hill. Drive to your cottage if you know where it is and just go in and start your holiday. Someone will be around to welcome you and show you the Spa.
