Location description
Mevagissey is the largest fishing village in the Bay. It's working harbour has an unbroken tradition of boat building since 1745. Fishermen still repair nets on the quayside, using ancient skills and modern materials. The fishermen are happy to take visitors out on angling or pleasure trips, and small motor boats can be hired for self-drive.
In the narrow streets of Mevagissey leading off the harbour, craft workshops sit side-by-side with shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants and pubs which were once the haunts of Cornish smugglers! Mevagissey is the home of the World of Model Railways Exhibition - an impressive collection of models and a layout with 50 working trains - while across on the quayside, in the old lifeboat house, there's the Aquarium.
Also not to be missed is the treasured Mevagissey Folk Museum situated on the East Quay. Displays show how Mevagissey once looked when the Pilchard Industry was booming. In fact Mevagissey was the first to have electric street lighting, powered from Pilchard Oil, and was the starting place of Pears Soap.
Climbing up through the backdrop of Mevagissey's terraced houses and away from the activity of the quayside the pastoral peace of Cornwall takes over. Here the visitor can enjoy the full flavour of rich farmland, a river valley and coastal walks.
At the end of June, Mevagissey celebrates Feast Week, which is based on religion and St Peter's Day - St Peter being the patron saint of fishermen. During the pre-Christmas period Mevagissey has a wonderful display of Christmas Lights and the New Year is celebrated in the Cornish tradition in which almost everybody wears fancy dress.
Mevagissey is an excellent place to spend your holiday. Being centrally located in Cornwall, it makes life easy to tour the county, and is an ideal base for visiting the many nearby tourist attractions including the Lost Gardens of Heligan, The Eden Project and the National Maritime Museum.
