Description of holiday cottage in Lucca, Tuscany

This typical Tuscan farmhouse, situated between Lucca and Collodi (Pinocchio’s village), dates back to XIX century. The current owner, a journalist whose family home it used to be, has recently and lovingly restored it into a holiday home. A conservative renovation has been carried out to preserve the charming rural Tuscan architecture. The half stone painting tecnique has been applied on external and internal walls. Most of the rooms have beamed ceilings, cotto-tiles, bricks-walls, stone staircases, fireplaces and one also newly-restored decorative frescos. The colours – pink, green, violet, yellow – are redolent of the endless nuances of the Tuscan countryside.

The Casolare del Lauro, at the feet of gentle Lucchesi hills, dotted with vineyards and olive groves, was originally in three parts and today converted into independent holidays apartments. Casa Elsa is the former old stable. The Fienile was both the cellar and, on first floor, the hayloft which was once reached with a steep ladder. The Rustico, where old rural atmosphere can best be felt, is the oldest part of the complex. Even the old pig-house, with the adjoining chicken-run, has been maintained. They are all in the “corte”, the typical inner court still in use in many little Tuscan villages – in this case the “corte Menchino”, an ideal place in which to relax and for children to play in.

Location description

The Casolare del Lauro is an excellent base from which to explore all the attraction in the environs. Beautyful art cities (such as Lucca, Pisa and Florence) and the historical villas of Lucchesia are all close by (Villa Mansi, Villa Torrigiani and the former Villa Reale now Pecci-Blunt). They have often been the location for many movies and advertising shootings.
At Casolare del lauro there is an authentic and cozy atmosphere ("home-away-from-home"), ideal for families with children and for people loving Tuscan settings.


It’s also possibile to visit local farmhouses which produce the famous wine DOC of the Lucchesi hills, an oil presses where you can buy the extravergin olive oil.

Families with children, and those who fell in love with Roberto Benigni’s movie “Pinocchio”, can’t miss a vist to the nearby village of Collodi with its famous Pinocchio Park and Villa Garzoni Park.

The many old “pievi”, or small parish churches, in the Capannori area are nearby. Among the most interesting, there is the Romanic Pieve di San Gennaro with an old terracotta angel statue attributed to Leonardo da Vinci.

Directions

By car: on A11 Firenze Mare highway, coming from Milan and Genoa, take Capannori exit and follow directions for Pescia-Collodi. After the Gragnano sign, you overcome Fontananuova, the Country Club Hotel, the Pinocchio Centro Commerciale (bricks-built, on the right). Just before the white sign of Lappato village, turn right in the private road which leads to Casolare del Lauro. On A 11, but coming from Florence, Bologna and Rome, take the Chiesina Uzzanese exit and follow signs for Pescia and Collodi Park. Just after Lappato, turn left.

By train: on Florence-Viareggio line, stop at railway station of Lucca or Pescia

By plane: the nearest international airports are Galileo Galilei of Pisa and Peretola of Florence, with are different car-rental offices
