Description of holiday cottage near Lower Bogue, Eleuthera

If you want to see Bahamas in its natural form where the friendly local people smile and wave at you from their weather beaten homes, where you can feel at one with nature and the sea then welcome to the island of Eleuthera, which incidentally, means “freedom.” Eleuthera is a place free from the normal stresses of life. Do not expect lots of shopping, pubs, restaurants or night life -- no fast food places either.

Our two bedroom house sleeps four people. A queen size bedroom has air conditioning and a remote-controlled ceiling fan. Another room has twin beds and remote-controlled ceiling fan.

The living accommodation is upstairs to make the most of the sea views. This area consists of a bathroom with a tub / shower and an open-plan kitchen / living room. This area also has air conditioning, a fan and telephone along with satellite TV. There is a computer with dsl internet access downstairs in the hallway this also has wireless internet free of charge so if you want to bring your own laptop.

The kitchen has a large refrigerator / freezer, dishwasher, kettle, toaster, microwave, juicer coffee maker as well as all the usual crockery etc. There is a table and chairs for four. The living area has a sofa, chairs, coffee tables and TV with free satellite viewing.

There are French doors to the front and a single door at the back that all lead onto a wrap around deck with further seating and tables, and of course, great views and sunsets. The upstairs shares a laundry room with the main house.

Location description

Eleuthera can be a bit of a culture shock with the speed limits in the settlements of 15 mph, no traffic lights and only one main road which runs the whole 110 miles of the island. Eleuthera island is only 3 miles wide at its widest point so you are never far from the sea. The wild Atlantic ocean is one side where you can surf. The other side is the calmer leeward sea, perfect for snorkeling and water skiing. The two oceans meet at Glass Window Bridge which is only a car width across. The is one of Eleuthera's tourist spots where you can see the rough Atlantic ocean crashing against the rocks on one side and the clear calm turquoise water of the Caribbean on the other side.

Eleuthera is well known for its unspoiled beaches, surfing and excellent diving. Current settlement is just 5 miles from north Eleuthera airport which has direct links from the USA and Nassau. Five minutes drive away from our home, Freedom View, is the “Current Cut” which is one of the top ten dive sites in the world where the dark Atlantic sea meets the calm leeward side. You can take a drift dive at Current Cut lasting 10 minutes where you could see rays, sharks and all sorts of marine life. Diving around Eleuthera is quite popular.

This is also the site for the a marina to be built soon, enticing the rich and famous to North Eleuthera. Talking of rich and famous, the well known Harbour Island (Briland to the locals) is only a water taxi ride away and well worth the visit. Also nearby is Preacher's Cave, Glass Window Bridge and Spanish Wells -- another pretty island that you can reach in a few minutes by water taxi.

They say “Eleuthera is not for everyone” but if you are looking for peace and quiet and a slower pace of life with fantastic ocean views, then our house “Freedom View” could be the vacation rental home for you.

At “Freedom View”, you have the freedom to choose what you want to do and when you want to do it. You could dive in the reefs, surf, bone fish, water ski or perhaps just cruise the coast on our boat with our caretakers Foster and Vernie. Alternatively you could just lay in a hammock or sit on the rocks and gaze out at the beautiful turquoise sea.

From our “back yard,” you can see miles around the coast of Eleuthera and may be lucky enough to see dolphins. There is easy access to the sea either down our slipway or use the steps, You can swim each day in the sea straight off our slip way; it is shallow and always about 80 degrees, and when the tide is out, there is a small beach this whole area has a sandy bottom.

You can wander around our acre plot and pick any of the fruits that are ripe. We have papaya, mango, bananas, tangerines and coconuts.

If you feel like a walk, our dogs (pot cakes) Tessa and Sadie would love to go with you. They live in a pen with a million dollar ocean view that most people would die for. Foster will call each day to attend to the dogs and will be glad to help you with anything you may require.

There are several little shops locally for you to buy your groceries also in lower bogue there is a gas station and licqour store.
