Description of holiday cottage in Kirkby Stephen, Lake District / North West

We always enjoy the reaction from our guests when we show them around on their first stay in The Haystore! We like it even more when they tell us how much they've enjoyed their stay, and that they hope to be back.

The Haystore is one of three luxury cottages in a high quality conversion of a magnificent Victorian stone barn set in the grounds of The Green, Ravenstonedale, once a farm. All the cottages have received a four star rating and a Gold Award accolade from Visit Britain.

The Haystore is on two levels, with two ensuite bedrooms on the ground floor and the living accommodation above. One of the ensuite bathrooms has a second door from the hallway, so it can be used by an additional guest - or your visiting friends - without having to go through its attached bedroom. Be careful they don't decide to lock themselves in for an extended soak in the whirlpool bath....

As with our other two cottages, our guidelines in creating The Haystore have been comfort and quality; we've tried to furnish and equip our cottages to meet all your needs, but we always welcome any suggestions! We've made a feature of the original beams in The Haystore, and added a large timber gallery (using the original floor joists and planking) which overlooks the lounge, and has two large armchairs one of which can be converted into a single bed for a fifth guest.
The lounge is comfortably furnished with two sofas and has large patio doors where the barn doors used to be, which lead out onto your own private terrace with a table and chairs - ideal for an al fresco breakfast in the summer. There's underfloor heating throughout, but we've also fitted a woodburning stove in the lounge, with an impressive stone fireplace, just in case you enjoy the mood and comfort only a real fire can give - especially at Christmas! Naturally there's a flatscreen TV, DVD player and WiFi internet access.

The dining table comfortably seats six, and whether you fancy real Cumberland sausage, or want to be more adventurous with the local produce, cooking shouldn't be a chore in the modern fitted kitchen with separate double oven and halogen hob, large fridge/freezer and everything you'd expect, including a dishwasher so you don't have to wash up on holiday. Of course, there's a microwave for a quick meal, and an electric crockpot so that you can have a casserole ready when you come back from a day out.
If you prefer to eat out, the nearest pub/restaurant (and local shop!) is just a mile away in the village, another within 2.5 miles (or about a mile if you fancy a walk across the fields), with more choice slightly further afield.
Whether you want walking, mountain biking, fishing, sightseeing, photography or wildlife there's plenty of scope in the immediate area, and we can help with arranging horse riding and mountain bike hire locally. The village has a tennis court and golf course, with another golf course in Kirkby Stephen. And if you feel like simply relaxing, you'll enjoy the facilities and views from our grounds, where Red Squirrels are daily visitors. Smaller and generally much shyer than the greys that have largely supplanted them elsewhere, these delightful animals still survive locally, although extinct in most parts of the country. Get your camera, and be patient!

Wainwright's book on the Howgill Fells will help you with local exploring and The Yorkshire Dales and The Lake District are both within easy reach.

The layout of The Haystore may not be ideal if you want to bring young children, but we're happy to discuss your needs and help you decide whether to book. We don't allow pets in The Haystore, but we do have dog friendly accommodation in The Carthouse.

And if you like to holiday (or take a short break) as a group, then we can link The Byre and The Haystore to provide real comfort for eight or nine, or by renting all three cottages groups of up to 15 can be accommodated.

We hope to be able to welcome you to Green Barn Cottages, and it's important to us that you enjoy your stay in this lovely part of the Eden Valley!
