Location description
Beautiful views over the hills and forests. The gite is freestanding and positioned centrally in the small hamlet. The number of cars passing by each day can be counted on one hand. From the house several walking routes can be found, through the fields and the forests. The chickens and ducks from the French neighbours give you the feeling of a peaceful farm land. The village St. Agnan is less than 1km away and offers the French Boulangerie, the church, the bank (including banking machine) and a small bar/restaurant also offering pizza’s for take away. The supermarket (open 7 days a week) is in Hautefort which is only 2 driving minutes away. All villages in the environment are very interesting and touristic, mostly because of the characteristic small streets, old churches and abbeys (typically from the 13th century), castles and ruins.
Activities
The gite is the perfect place to wake up peacefully in the morning and enjoy a French breakfast. Depending on the time of the year you can pick your own cherries, berries, apples, figs or walnuts, all within hand reach from the garden. The garden chairs give you the opportunity to relax, read a book, listen to music or get inspiration for a day trip in the region. The first visit is of course to the magnificent castle of Hautefort, which is only a stones throw away. The castle is the pride of the local mayor, who by the way started his career living in the house in Les Broussilloux. Obviously, you can also decide to be a real tourist for the day and go south and visit the highlights of the Dordogne Valley (Sarlat, Montignac and Lascaux, the castles, the rivers, and the caves). In the direct environment of Les Broussilloux you can also keep active by playing tennis, golf, ride a horse, go mountain biking, swimming, walking or even play the games of paint ball or driving a quad. A visit to one of the many local markets can be interesting; this can be the weekly market, an antique market or even a special festival which almost every respectful village organizes a number of times in the season.
Culinary and wines
In this region, the local wine is from Bergerac, Pecharmant and Monbazillac. And if you already familiar with the wine regions of Bordeaux and St Emilion, those regions are only 1.5 hours away! Enjoy tasting all of the different options!
The famous brown limousine beef cow is available from the region to the north. And of course, there is all the famous French cheeses to try with your wine tastings!
The specialty of the region is the goose and duck (‘canard’) whose (enormous range of) products can be found for very reasonable pricing. The local traditonal ‘fois gras’ is available and you can visit a local farm to see the “gavage” where they feed the ducks. And of course, they offer home made, fresh from the farm products to take home to cook!
Enjoy the traditional pairing of pate de fois gras with a glass of Monbazillac!
Hautefort (2 km) has a number of very good restaurants. In St. Agnan a weekly local market with food (canard!!), music and dancing is organized in the high season.
