Gaucin Holiday Cottage, Andalucia, Spain

Cottage Gaucin, Alistair Sawday: one of the 10 most romantic places to stay

Description of holiday cottage in Gaucin, Andalucia

The property is situated just below the mountain village of Gaucin with spectacular views to Gibraltar and Africa to the front and the backdrop of the village behind.

The houses, which are in walking distance of Gaucin and are constructed in Andalucian style with Moorish features, are located in 11 acres of almond and citrus orchards, carpeted with wild flowers.

There are two full sized infinity pools magnificently set in natural rocks. The main 105 m2 pool has been featured in many publications. The beautiful gardens are slightly rocky and terraced with a riot of semi tropical plants, shady trees and sloping lawns.

The tennis court has an American all weather cushioned surface and was recently described as one of the most beautiful in southern Europe . There is an outside Jacuzzi. With its amazing views and spectacular gardens set in the heart of nature, El Nobo is the ideal peaceful retreat whether for a few days or longer.

La Herradura (sleeps 4)
150 sq meter Villa with infinity pool “a beautiful villa with fantastic views tucked into the hill”
The villa is tucked into the side of a hill just below the village of Gaucin, with amazing views to Gibraltar and Africa. Facing due south, steps from the full length wide terrace form an amphitheatre to the sloping garden and the pool area. Water from the cascade tumbles down a rock face into the 35m2 infinity pool which is surrounded by a sunbathing terrace and a covered patio.

The interior combines the most modern installations, under floor heating and insulation together with old Spanish and Moorish decoration and artifacts. The spacious main living area has a large fireplace and French windows leading onto the long south facing part covered terrace. East facing there is a breakfast terrace.

It is abutted by the dining and kitchen area which has its own open-fire grill and larder. The master bedroom has French windows onto the main terrace. Both bedrooms have large built in cupboards and adjoining fully equipped bathrooms. The sumptuous Jacuzzi built into its own gazebo a few steps from the main terrace is a unique feature and a wonderful place to relax.

El Nobo is listed in the 2003 edition of Alistair Sawday’s EUROPE Special Places to Stay and as such we pride ourselves on the variety of courses and activities we can arrange or provide. These include riding, golf, walking tours and not least day trips & tours of Morocco.

There is a very limited bus service to Gaucin, so we always advise renting a car. This is usually inexpensive.

Location description

Gaucin:
Local shopping illustrates the slower pace of the village and listening to the Spanish ladies gossip is part of the winding down process.

Search out the local shops hiding behind cooling blinds in the villagers' front parlours for anything from toothpaste to pork chops.

People are very welcoming and friendly, but take a phrase book as few of the local speak English.

Visit the local covered market for freshly cooked breakfast churros, vegetables and bread, and buy fresh fish from the van which visits daily.

Golf:
The Costa del Sol is also known as the Costa del Golf.
There are 28 courses between Alcaidesa near Gibraltar and Velez,
East of Malaga. Courses within 50 minutes of El Nobo
(going west to East) are:
Alcaidesa
San Roque
Valderama
Sotogrande
Almenara
La Canada
La Duquesa
Estepona
Monte Mayor

Riding:
From the village and at Finca El Repilado (10 mins)

Walking:
The area is surrounded by magnificent walking country with forest trails long the nearby Genal and Guadal rivers. The area is mountainous, totally unspoilt and nearly deserted.

Beaches:
El Nobo is a mere 30 mins by car from the Mediterranean coast which has excellent beaches. These extend from Sabanillas eastwards to Marbella and westwards to Gibraltar. It is also 90 mins to the Atlantic coast which extends from Tarifa (the centre of wind surfing) past Cape Trafalgar to the wonderful, uncrowded beaches at Bolonia and Zahara.

Eating Out:
There are several tapa bars selling traditional Spanish snack foods which can easily stretch to a meal and are excellent value for money. There are also various local restaurants open mostly from April to October.

Outside the village and a short drive away there is a selection of good restaurants offering a wide variety of Spanish and International cuisine and which are open all year round.

Nightlife:
There are three Night clubs and over 15 bars in the village. The Spanish know how to party.

Culture:
Thanks to its central and unique location, the big Andalucian cities of Seville, Granada, Malaga and Ronda can be done on a day trip. Even Morocco can be done in a day trip.

Directions

The house is located just below the mountain village of Gaucin. There are three main roads into the village:

* From the Southwest, ie Gibraltar, Algecieras.
Take N 340 (the coastal autovia) to northbound A 369 direction Jimena de la Frontera. After some 50 kms you enter Gaucin and opposite the petrol station turn right into the village.

Alternatively, take the coastal autovia N 340 eastbound direction Malaga, and then the toll road AP7 (peaje) to exit km 142 marked Casares/Gaucin and follow A 377 to Gaucin as indicated below.

* From the Southeast, ie Malaga, Marbella.
Drive westwards along the coastal autovia N 340 and then the AP7 toll road (peaje) past Estapona to the next exit -km 142 marked Casares/Gaucin A 377. Take the A377 direction Casares and continue, past the Casares turn off, for some 25 km up hill and down dale eventually climbing steeply till you reach Gaucin arriving at a T junction. Turn right into the village.

* From the North, ie Ronda, Madrid.
Leave Ronda on southbound A 369 marked Gaucin Algecieras. 34 kms of windy beautiful mountain road brings you to Gaucin. At petrol station turn left into village.

Gaucin to the house
Proceed into village leaving the builders yard and then the old convent on your right, follow the main winding road for about 500 meters. Some 50 meters before entering a small triangular square and just after the Hotel Rural on the right, take an acute turning to your right signed “Camino de Gibraltar”. (If you have a large car it might be wise to proceed into the small square and turn about on your tracks then taking the road 50 meters now on your left). Follow this concrete road downhill out of the town when it becomes a dirt road. Go on down
the steepish hill until the track levels out and rises slightly to the brow of a mound. Turn left through the yellow painted gateposts.

La Herradura guests should turn hard left after entering the gate posts. Follow the track below the tennis court and park above the house. Do not drive down the concreted S to the house entrance.
