Location description
Situated to the east of Malaga, the Axarquia region of Andalucia is one of the most stunning parts of Southern Spain. The scenery is breathtaking and boasts rolling hills and vast mountain ranges, peaceful lakes and valleys. It also has one of the best climates in Europe, birdlife is abundant and the hills are ablaze with flowers and blossom from January onwards.
Located off the main tourist route, Cutar has a lot of charm and is a quiet, traditional village with architecture that reflects its Moorish heritage. In the shadow of the 16th Century church the white houses and small narrow streets tumble down the hillside. Because of the very mild semi-tropical climate, farmers grow mangos, avocados, citrus fruits, dates, figs, pomegranate, guava, sugar cane and the heavy, delicious Muscat grapes. The grapes are dried into raisins or made into the famous Malaga muscatel dessert wine.
The village has a general store, a pharmacy, a bakery, two bars and the traditional way of Andalucian life. Banks, cash machines, supermarkets, restaurants and (in the summer) open air swimming pools can be found 5-10 minutes drive away in the neighbouring villages of El Borge, Almachar and Benamargosa.
Malaga itself is a wonderful town, still largely undiscovered by tourists - well worth a visit for the new Picasso Museum, the Moorish Alcazabar, the Arab baths and excellent bodegas.
Traditional Fiestas take place in Cutar and nearby villages throughout the spring, summer and autumn and nature and wildlife lovers will find many delightful places to walk in the nearby hills and countryside - as well as the impressive Mount Maroma. The ancient city of Antequera is almost as close as Malaga and well worth a visit, with the El Torcal park nearby and the unmissable springtime visit of the pink flamingoes. Ronda is within easy reach and the world heritage city of Cordoba is just possible on a day trip. One of the most attractive prospects for the day tripper is the Moorish City of Granada – home of the poet Lorca, the world famous Alhambra and the Generalife gardens - is an hour and a half away.

Directions
To reach Cútar from Malaga airport, you take the motorway eastwards along the coast as far as Velez Malaga. Here you leave the motorway and drive north along the Viñuela road until yountil you get to the Benamargosa turn off which is about 1 km from the roundabout (there’s a very large bar on the corner called ‘El Cruce’). It’s about 14Km from here to Cútar. Turn left here and continue through Triana to Benamargosa. When you get to the centre of Benamargosa drive over the bridge and follow the road through the hills to Cutar. The drive from Benamargosa to Cutar takes about 15mins. You’ll eventually see Cútar appear off to your right just after the 5km mark.
