Description of holiday cottage in Contrada Cinera, Puglia
These ancient trulli and lamia buildings have been restored to their former glory and provide high specification facilities and finishes, including re-landscaped gardens and terraces over looking the three acre plot and valley beyond.
Off the beaten track, near the end of a stone walled country lane with no through traffic, enter the gravel driveway through gates with a view of gardens and terraced olive groves.
From a courtyard shaded with pine trees, enter the original stone lamia with country kitchen, dining and living area. Large double doors open out on to the stone courtyard with pergola and extended dining area. In front of the comfy seating is an flat screen TV with DVD, surround sound and stereo with CD player and ipod cradle. The small but fully equipped kitchen has an electric oven, gas hob and fridge freezer.
An internal stone tunnel provides a link to a double bedroom with cast iron bed in the original cone roofed trullo with high ceilings and authentic stone arches around the alcoves. Double doors lead out to a terraced seating area under the shade of a large and old olive tree.
Another larger, stone walled and barrel roofed lamia provides a central hallway with access to a fully tiled central bathroom (with shower, WC, bidet and sink) and large bedroom containing a day bed and two single beds (which can be joined to form a second double bed if required).
All rooms have gas central heating. The flexible accommodation sleeps up to 5 and is ideal for couples, families and groups. The courtyard leads to terraced gardens and land separated by low stone walls, each with a variety of established fruit trees and uninhabited valley views. Past a young olive grove, a stone path leads up to the top terrace where you can sit and relax with only the sound of the breeze and occasional wildlife.

Location description
Puglia, or Apulia in Italian, is the long strip of land 400km from North to South that makes up the 'heel' of Italy. For centuries it was a strategic provenience, colonized, invaded and conquered (like it's neighbours, Calabria and Sicily) by just about every major power of the day - from the Greeks through to the Spanish. These days clean seas, reliable sunshine and beautiful landscapes are the draw for holiday makers both Italian and foreign.
Trulli Talily is nestled in the heart of Valle d'Itria, probably the most sought after area of Puglia. The Valle d'Itria is an undulating plateau in the centre of the province containing some of Puglia's prettiest landscapes.
Unique to this area are 'Trulli' which are dotted throughout Puglia countryside with olive groves, vineyards, cherry, peach and almond orchards, all neatly partitioned by dry-stone walls. Trulli are ancient cylindrical buildings with thick white limestone walls and stone conical roofs. Often attached are 'lamia', a barrel roofed stone building. These ancient stone buildings were lived in by the agricultural community to keep cool in the heat and warm in the winter. Local expertise is required to refurbish the ancient stone and there are now some amazing properties in the area. Learn more about the towns around Trulli Talily...
Tourist attractions
With such beautiful old centres and surrounding landscapes, Cisternino and Ostuni are the towns to be near. The surrounding countryside is the most sought after area in the region. Trulli Talily is located in between the two towns, 6km from Cisternino, 7km from Ostuni and 7km from the coastal beaches. The old towns of Ceglie Messapia and Martina Franca are also nearby.
The centre of nearby
Alberobello is dominated with traditional trulli, around 1500 pack the narrow streets. The maze of well-preserved winding streets provides a fascinating amble and there are some exceptional views - particularly from Largo Castello over the woods to the North. Bits of cavorting Baroque twist out of unexpected places, including an ornamented eighteenth-century obelisk, 21m high, dedicated to Saint Oronza, which stands in the Piazza (Square) della Liberta.
A few kilometres south,
Locoronto, which owes it's name to it's circular layout, has good views over the whole area, speckled with red and grey roofed trulli in a sea of vines and olive and almond trees. Further south, Cisternino rejoices in the nickname "La Vera" (the Real Thing) and is a marvellous antidote to touristy Alberobello. It's a pleasure to wander around the tiny, whitewashed alleyways of it's old town.
Going further south again, the other side of Trulli Talily, is
Ostuni, known as "the White City", one of Southern Italy's most stunning small towns with a sandy coastline only 7km away. Situated on three hills at the Southern most edge of Le Merge, it was an important Greco-Roman city in the first century AD. The old centre spreads across the highest of the hills, a gleaming white splash of sun bleached streets and cobbled alleyways, dominating the plains below.
