Laquairie Cottage, Laquairie - Holiday Cottage near Condat and the Rhue Gorge

Description of holiday cottage in Condat, Auvergne

At the edge of the tiny hamlet of Laquairie, built in 1820 and completely restored in 2000, Di’s favourite cottage is perched high above Condat and the Rhue gorge. It has a large living room with dining table, huge fireplace, easy chairs and fitted kitchen (dishwasher, microwave, etc.), plus a cellar, main bedroom with en suite bathroom (shower & washing machine), and a pretty little second bedroom.

The bathroom can only be reached via the main bedroom. The cottage has full oil-fired central heating and is equipped to a very high standard throughout. Laquairie is in wonderful walking country and is home to the unique Tranchades, clefts in the rock up to 100 feet deep that you can visit. One of France's famous national footpaths, GR4 that runs from the Atlantic to the Med, is about 20 minutes - on foot, of course!

All my houses are stylish, spotlessly clean, have garden table and chairs, a sunshade and barbecue. There's lots of information in English so you get the most from your holiday.

You'll find comfy beds made up ready for you when you arrive (bed linen & towels are all provided) and those little things - soap, loo roll, a hair dryer, iron, ironing board, and in the kitchen, washing-up liquid, kitchen roll, a kettle, teapot, oven gloves, herbs, salt, pepper, enough glasses, in other words all you need for a relaxing holiday.

You can order a meal for the evening of your arrival if you prefer not to shop on your way here, or we can book a table for you at a local restaurant. There is a 25 page folder in English full of information on the area, and books, maps and board games. And if the car breaks down (or you do), we're here to help.

Directions

Routes from the channel ports to Laquairie:

"A" roads are Autoroutes, usually toll roads (Péages) and shown by blue signs. Green signs send you via main roads. The Péripherique (Paris ring road) is demanding, city traffic is heavy at rush hour.
In driving time, we are 4½ hours from Paris, 3 hours from Vierzon and 1 hour from Clermont Ferrand.
If you will be arriving after 7 p.m., please phone to let us know.
Picnic? see "Shopping" on the Visitor Info sheet.

From Calais take A26 and A1 towards Paris; then either (1) go east of the city on A3, following signs to Cretail and Fontenay for A86, or (2) take the Péripherique, or (3) go wider still on the Francilienne; all 3 routes, follow Orleans, Bordeaux, Nantes to the A10. Longer in time but avoiding Paris completely, take A26 / A4, on via Troyes & cross-country, picking up the A71 north of Clermont, then as below.

From Cherbourg or Ouisterham, head for Caen then Paris on A13.

From Le Havre cross the Pont de Tancarville on A131 then follow Paris on A13.

Option 1: avoiding Paris and its sprawling suburbs. Leave A13 at exit 19, signed to Orléans, N154. This route is being steadily improved and takes you via Evreux, Dreux, Chartres (the famous cathedral is clearly visible - possible breakfast stop). After Chartres, continuing on N154, follow signs to Orléans and the A10.

Option 2: A13 / N10 Rambouillet.

Option 3: go round the Péripherique, follow Orleans, Bordeaux, Nantes, N10.

On A10 going south, look for signs to Clermont Ferrand A71 (a RIGHT filter). This long, fast stretch can be hot in summer. After paying your toll, continue south round Clermont without leaving the autoroute following A75 towards Montpellier. About 5 minutes south of Clermont leave the A75 at exit 6 signed Besse (en Chandesse) on D996. The road begins to climb steadily after Montagut-le-Blanc as you leave cultivated fields and red tiled roofs behind. Follow Besse on D978 through Le Chiex, notice the troglodyte caves in the cliff away to your left; go round Besse (centre to your right, useful Attac supermarket at second roundabout) towards Super Besse and Egliseneuve (d'Entraigues). You can usually see the Massif du Sancy, 1880 metres, on the right and the upper cable car station. Continue (left at forks) on D978 into Egliseneuve then on D678 towards Condat and Riom-ès-Montagnes. Go around Condat following Riom (not Centre Ville). At the roundabout, continue on the D678 towards Riom. In 1 mile, turn left at Le Pré de Biard (signposted Laquairie). Climb up from Le Pré de Biard, around 3 S bends. As you reach the hamlet, bear right before the Laquairie sign. Your house is straight ahead. It has a dark green door and the key is under the flower pot. Phone us when you arrive (04 7178 6357) to let us know you’ve reached Laquairie safely.

...and please, do arrive after 4 p.m., it takes time to make your house ready.

Approaches from other directions are scenic rather than fast:
from the west either go Aurillac/Murat/Condat (where you head left for Riom, then as above) or from Brive-la-Gaillarde take E70 N89 towards Clermont, bear right before Ussel, through Bort-les-Orgues, Riom-ès-Montagnes and turn right at Le Pré de Biard as you approach Condat.
from the south come St Flour, Murat and meander down the pretty Santoire valley to Condat.
from the east, go round Lyon, follow Clermont; as you near Clermont, follow Montpellier to head south on A75 which you leave by exit 6, as above, heading for Besse.

If you don't see a sign to where you want, follow "Autres Directions" (i.e. everywhere else) or the all embracing "Toutes Directions". A sign at the far side of a cross roads pointing left or right may mean straight on. Even when you do spot them, French road signs are not always clear, even to the natives!
