Description of holiday cottage in Appledore, South West

Mariners Cottage is ideally situated in one of the typically narrow streets in the old part of the town, and a few seconds walk from the Quay and local shops.

It is a typical fisherman’s cottage, sleeping up to 4 persons in two bedrooms, that has been modernised and now is a cosy and comfortable holiday home. One bedroom has a double bed and the other has twin beds.

We use it ourselves regularly throughout the year. Self-catering is easy with a small supermarket with extended opening hours just along the Quay, and a large Morrisons in Bideford. Fresh fish is often available from trawlers on the Quay. There is an excellent tearoom and delicatessen just around the corner in Market Street and for those who do not simply want to exchange one kitchen for another! there are small restaurants and pubs with bar and restaurant food within a very short walk, not to mention an excellent Fish and Chip shop !!

Mariners is available for booking all year round. Winter rates are low, and it can be as comfortable and cosy in the Winter as in the Summer. Central heating is provided in winter at no extra charge, and there are additional room heaters available.

Out of season we are happy to offer long weekend and short breaks when the cottage is available.

Location description

This fascinating old port, with an historic past and a long tradition of boat building and fishing, lies where the rivers Taw and Torridge join. The quaint, narrow streets and drangs are lined with small colour-washed fishermen’s cottages - Georgian and Victorian but with some dating back to the Elizabethan era - and they give a special atmosphere and charm.

The central part of this delightful seafaring old town has changed little in the last hundred years and has been declared a Conservation area.

Most of the small streets lead down to the Quay, which provides delightful views across the estuary to Instow, and at which the fishing boats tie up. There is a small but great range of shops, pubs, restaurants and art galleries and the Quay is the focal point of village activities including fishing trips, boat trips around the estuary, crabbing contests, and the occasional Brass Band and Morris Dancers performances.

North Devon is nearly unrivalled as a holiday destination – wonderfully green with winding lanes, sandy and surfing beaches as well as rugged coastline, the Tarka Trail and coastal walks, and beautiful wilderness on Exmoor. Two classical golf courses and fishing galore !!

Driving is the best way. Appledore is about 45 miles from Junction 27 Taunton on M5 Motorway and is15 miles from Barnstaple and 3 miles from Bideford.
