Location description
Wengen lies on a wind protected terrace at the foot of the Jungfrau,400 metres above the Lauterbrunnen valley at an altitude of 1274 M. The tradition-imbued,car free holiday resort offers a family friendly ski and rambling area around the Mannlichen and the Kleine Scheidegg. With its nostalgic timber houses, the many dispersed holiday chalets and hotels dating from the "belle-epoque" period, this Bernese Oberland holiday resort has retained all the character of a picture postcard mountain village.Opening widely to the south west, the terrace guarantees above-average hours of sunshine. In the summer you can explore over 500 KM of marked walking trails and 15 mountain cableways that lead to the most beautiful vantage points of the Jungfrau region - take, for example, the classic panorama route between Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg, which offers a particularly impressive view of the Eiger,Monch and Jungfrau.
Those who like things a bit more spirited might like to try their skill at paragliding, river rafting or canyoning. But for eye-popping amazement, you should walk the Eiger trail at the foot of the Eiger north face,a medium-difficulty mountain walking tour.Take a trip to the highest railway station in Europe, the Jungfrau railway-the most famous mountain railway in the world. Opened in 1912, this cog wheel railway leads to the highest railway station in Europe at 3454M above sea level. It stops at viewing platforms allowing fascinating views over the famous north wall of the Eiger and the glaciers of Eismeer.
Visit the Schiltorn with Piz Gloria (the highest situated revolving restaurant in the Alps) made famous in the James Bond film, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". In Winter, Wengen is ideal with 110 KM of easy to medium-difficulty pistes, and the renowned World Cup piste on the Lauberhorn as its crowning glory. The neighbouring ski areas of the Jungfrau region,Grindelwald-First and Murren-Schilthorn are also readily accessible. The clean air,the long hours of sunshine-especially in winter-the toboggan runs and around 50 KM of winter hiking trails also serve to attract non-skiers to the sunny resort. It’s difficult to overstate how stunning the Lauterbrunnen Valley is – even seasoned Alpinists shrug their shoulders and call it the most beautiful valley in Europe! An immense U-shaped valley (the world’s deepest) with bluffs on either side rising 1000m sheer, doused by some 72 waterfalls, it is utterly spectacular. However long you stay, two hours or two weeks, you won’t want to leave. Lauterbrunnen village itself lies on the valley floor, while the slopes above host two of Switzerland’s most appealing resorts. Muerren to the west is the transfer point for a dramatic ride up the longest cable railway in the Alps to the Piz Gloria on the Schilthorn peak, while Wengen to the east is a stop on the train line up to Kleine Scheidegg and the Jungfraujoch. Both are car-free, perched on narrow shelves of pasture way above the world below, and both offer some of the best hiking and skiing to be enjoyed in the Alps. Other places to visit include the picturesque towns of Bönigen and Iseltwald.

Local events
Every January the famous world championship downhill run. Lauberhorn is a mountain in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland, located between Wengen and Grindelwald. Its summit is at an elevation of 8,110 feet (2472 m) above sea level. The mountain is best known as the site of the Lauberhorn alpine ski races held annually above Wengen in the Bernese Oberland. The downhill course is the longest in the world; its enormous length of 4.455 km (2.77 miles) results in run times of two and a half minutes (about 30–45 seconds longer than regular downhill races) and top speeds approach 160 km/h (100 mph), the highest on the FIS World Cup circuit. The Lauberhorn downhill run is said to be the most picturesque in the world, as it is embedded in a unique landscape - surrounded by the massive mountains of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, above the Lauterbrunnen valley. It is also known for its spectacular run arrangements as the Hundschopf (a 40 m (130 ft.) jump over a rock nose), the Kernen-S (passing under a bridge at around 80 km/h) and the Wasserstation Tunnel (underpassing the viaduct of the local railroad Wengernalpbahn).
Tourist attractions
The Jungfraujoch is Switzerland's most famous day trip. Travel to Europe's highest railway station - you won't believe your eyes!Lose all sense of direction as the little train travels deeper and deeper into the mountain. And when it stops, the north face of the Eiger, and later the sea of ice, become visible through holes in the rock. Finally you reach the top: gaze at row upon row of mountain peaks which lie before the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Alpine choughs dive deep down into the valleys of the Bernese Oberland, and on the other side, the mighty Aletsch glacier flows down into the Valais. The views and thin air at 3,571m will take your breath away. Visit the ice palace with its perpetual ice sculptures, take a trip on a dog sled or climb up to the Mönchsjoch Hut – it’s all part of the mountain dream. Then take the little train back down the mountain, past landscape superlatives like the Lauberhorn and the Staubbach Falls, and through dense forests and green meadows, to Lauterbrunnen via Wengen.
