Location description
Skiing in Isola 2000Village altitude 2000m
Ski range 1800 - 2610m
Isola 2000 has an excellent snow record with virtually no queues and boasts uncrowded pistes even during the school holidays. This means more ski-ing for you. Many a time we have found ourselves being the only ones on a piste, and not a single person waiting at the lift. It is one of Frances best kept secrets. The resort offers plenty of challenging runs and excellent off piste (subject to conditions) for the experienced skier. It's also excellent for beginners and intermediate skiers with lots of "snow sure" slopes.
For information on ski passes, lifts, snow conditions and weather please visit Tourist Information: www.isola2000.com
Winter in Isola 2000
Isola 2000 consists mainly of a long, snaking collection of apartments, shops, bars and restaurants, all under one roof and linked by a central corridor. There are a number of restaurants offering high quality quisine and also there is a good choice of more reasonably priced ones too. You will find the prices are considerably lower than those of better-known resorts.
Our favourite restaurant in the evenings is the Cow Club, and the Crocodlile Bar is good for a drink. During the day we often stop for a drink or lunch at the La Vallette, it comes with its own donkey.
The ski resort offers a varied combination of activities and events:
• Torch light parades, fireworks, night-time skiing, snowshoe hiking, various shows, bbq parties at the snow park, free champagne for New Years Eve and roses on St Valentines Day.
• Ice-skating, ice karting, snowmobile hire.
• Various competitions i.e. Andros Trophy (January), PACA Snowboard tour, French ski championships, Big Boarder competiton.
Isola village just 17km down the mountain has an excellent indoor swimming pool with slide, sauna and fitness room, worth a visit if you wish to relax for a day.
Summer in Isola 2000
During the Summer Season there are many activities in Isola 2000.
July and August are the best months if you want all the facilities that are on offer for the summer holidays; the outdoor swimming pool is open, tennis, mountain biking, archery, table tennis, horse riding, fishing, mini golf, mountain climbing and zip wiring are all available.
The mountain walks are stunning at this time of year with an abundance of wild flowers and spectacular scenery. The Mercantour National Park is a ramblers paradise.
The gondola is open mornings and afternoons to speed you up to a higher starting point for your walk or for those of you who just want to enjoy the view without the exercise.
Other activities
Walking in Mercantour National ParkImmediately inland of Nice and the Cote d'Azur lie France's southernmost alps, where the Mercantour National Park is an outstanding example of a mountainous area with peaks exceeding 3000m. It is very popular, with over 800,000 visitors every year enjoying the 685km2 comprising of 7 valleys, 600km of marked footpaths, more than 100 lakes and a perpheral zone comprising 28 villages. The park has some spectacular scenery such as, Allos Lake, the largest high altitude lake in Europe, Col de la Bonnette, the highest pass in Europe (one of the stages of the Tour de France 2008).
Flora
The Mercantour is endowed with more than 2000 species of flowering plants, 200 of which are very rare: edelweiss and the martagon lily are the best known, but there is also saxifrage with multiple flowers, houseleek, moss campion and gentian offering a multi-coloured palette in the spring.
Fauna
Observe the agile chamois, several thousand of which live in the park, and marmots are plentiful. The ermine is rarer as is the ibex and the mouflon. There is a tremendous variety of wildlife in the Mercantour; stags and roebucks, hares and wild boars, partridge, eagles and buzzards, numerous species of butterflies and even a few wolves.
