Apartment Sabu is in the heart of the French Haute Alps; nestled in the beautiful valley of Vallouise, with its alpine meadows and medieval villages.

It sits in a peaceful location on the edge of the village, overlooking tranquil orchards and breathtaking mountains. Built in a traditional style using local larch wood, Apartment Sabu offers spacious accommodation for up to 6 people.

Park right outside the apartment and up a small flight of steps to the front door. Once inside you can dine, socialise and relax in the delightful communal area on the first floor furnished with comfy sofas, and a log burning stove. Prepare your meals in the open plan fully fitted modern kitchen and eat around the traditional Alsace dining table. Alternatively dine alfresco on the large south-facing balcony with its spectacular view over the orchards to the mountains.

On the first floor are a double and room with bunk beds, a shower room (with lashings of hot water) and separate toilet. Climb up the stairs and you enter a grand master bedroom with an extremely comfortable king-sized bed. The en suite bathroom boasts a double person bath for a really good soak after a long day in the mountains. A glazed door leads to a private south-facing balcony equipped with two sun loungers perfect for lazing on listening to the crickets while enjoying a chilled glass of wine as the Provençal sun goes down.

Location description

Vallouise is located on the edge of the Ecrins National Park, at the foot of the prestigious summit of Mont Pelvoux. Within a 5 minute drive are the ski resorts of Puy St Vincent and Pelvoux-Vallouise, which are on the Galaxie Ski Pass. Vallouise has everything (summer and winter) to attract people who love mountains and alpine scenery. This picturesque alpine village, with its traditional architecture combining wood and stone, is renowned for its listed medieval church with Romanesque porch and Lombardic frieze. It is a lively village with plenty of shops, good restaurants and a market on Thursdays.

Summer

Les Ecrins National Park is abundant in a wide variety of flora and fauna ideal for those into nature. Eagles, chamois, willow grouse, marmots, black grouse, ptarmigan, are just some of the 167 creatures you may come across, in addition to 1,800 varieties of beautiful flora. At 4,102 metres, the Barre des Ecrins, overlooking the Vallouise Valley, is a mountaineer’s paradise, with over 100 mountain routes and 740 km of trails.

Apartment Sabu offers fantastic walking from the doorstep. The GR54, which does the circuit of the Écrins park, passes through Vallouise: the stage on from here to Le Monetier via Lac de l'Eychauda is one of the best. Another good walk is to the hamlet of PUY AILLAUD. The path starts just to the right of the church and zigzags up the steep slope behind it with aerial views of the valley beneath. Other activities include; bird watching, mountain biking, bivouacking, horse riding, ‘via Ferrata’ or simply relaxing under the Provençal sun around the local outdoor swimming pool bathed in 300 days of sunshine a year!

Winter

Apartment Sabu's location in the Haute-Alpes, and armed with the Galaxie ski pass, gives you cheap and easy access to some of the most famous resorts and pistes known the world over. Skiing and snow boarding for all levels can be enjoyed in the resorts of Puy-St-Vincent (3.75km), Pelvoux (2km), Briancon (19km), Serre Chevalier (25km), Risoul/Vars (30km), Mongenevre (32km), La Grave (54km), Les Deux Alpes (83km) and Alpe-d’Huez (89km). The valleys of this region offer a spectacular setting perfect for cross-country skiing. Why not try out snowshoeing, snowmobiling, tobogganing, and ice climbing or pamper yourself by visiting the hot springs and spas at Mongenevre.

Go water skiing, rowing, kite boarding, windsurfing, funboarding, water-skiing and sailing in Serre Poncon - the Lake of Lights (54km), recognised as one of the country’s best water sports areas with its 2 water-skiing centres, and fifteen water sports centres.
Paragliding is enjoyed all year.

Local events

The local town of L'Argentière la Besse (10km) hosts many famous international competitions such as the annual Ice Festival (ice climbing), Tout à Blocs (rock climbing / bouldering) and the Canoe, Kayak and Slalom Euro Championships.
Some of the local alpine passes are featured in the Tour De France.

Tourist attractions

Vallouise is renowned for its listed medieval church, its penitents' chapel covered with wall paintings and its numerous sundials. The church of Saint Etienne, with its Romanesque porch, Lombardic frieze and superb grey and yellow stonework, stands majestically on one side of a little square in the centre of which is a beautiful pink stone round fountain decorated with lion heads (dating from 1894).

Briançon (20km),the highest town in Europe, is an impressive fortress town. It's fortifications were built by Louis XIV's engineer Vauban. The best way to see the town is to enter by the drawbridge gate, Porte Pignerol. Once inside the citadel you find yourself in a maze of ancient streets which house enticing shops, restaurants and bars. Whether you fancy a rest day from your mountain adventures, a spot of retail therapy or a slap-up meal in one of France’s most historic towns a trip to Briançon during your stay at Apartment Sabu is highly recommended.

Directions

By air: The easiest way to get to Vallouise is to fly with a low cost airline to Turin (Caselle) airport. You can search for the best cheap flight on www.skyscanner.net. Car hire is opposite arrivals and you can book Hertz car rental through Ryanair. The drive will take 2 hours. Alternative airports to fly to are; Nice, Lyon and Grenoble.

Driving: We take the channel tunnel and drive out stopping overnight at Beaune.

You can also take the Eurostar to Paris and catch a sleeper to L'Argentière la Besse (10 km away), where there are taxis outside the station to take you up to Vallouise.
