Tourist attractions
The monument on Hoad Hill in winter
Sir John Barrow was an intrepid explorer, a founder member of the Royal Geographic Society, and for forty years Second Secretary to the Admiralty - an extremely powerful position. He was responsible for spearheading many expeditions with the Royal Navy. His discoveries included the North West Passage. When he died in 1848, the town constructed a monument in his memory. Public subscription raised sufficient funds to erect a replica of a former Eddystone Lighthouse, on top of Hoad Hill overlooking the town. The monument was opened in 1850.
