Location description
Above Orebic rises a hill with the Franciscan Monastery and Church of Our Lady, built in 1470 g. by the Dubrovnik Republic on a strategic and important position over 150 metres above the Peljesac channel. A road leads to that rocky nest from which there is one of the most beautiful views of the islands of Korcula and Mljet, the shores of Pelje¨ac and the open sea. The church was built and vaulted by the Dubrovnik architect Mihoč Radi¨ić in the Gothic style. Beside it is the fortified monastery with loopholes, a cloister surrounded by a simple Renaissance arcade, a cistern for rainwater in its centre and a small garden in its shaded end.On the roof is a sundial with the relief of a Franciscan measuring the peaceful passage of time with the shadow of an iron rod.
OREBIC lies on the southwest part of the Peljesac Peninsula, at the foot of St. Ilija Hill (961 meters), a position exposed to sunshine the entire day. This picturesque town is an irresistable temptation to tourists seeking natural beauty and relaxation, it's many attractions including:centuries-old fir trees, cypresses, olive groves, spacious lawns and flower gardens and sunny pebble or sand beaches which in some places stretch for miles and in others are punctuated by small bays with crystal clear waters.
The beginnings of tourist development in Orebic go back to distant 1904.
Today Orebić has about 4.000 beds in hotels and very modern, good furnished apartments in family houses.
