Description of holiday apartment in Castara, Tobago

We built the house 2 years ago for us to live in when on island. The 2 ensuite bedroom apartment is 'Our Place' and so is very homely. It is all wood construction (local) with very high ceilings.

All the doors open out on to a deep balcony which runs the full length of the house. This is where we spend most of our time.
The ensuite studios are bright and airy with high ceilings and tiled floors with 2 sets of double doors opening out onto a balcony which is perfect for eating alfresco..

The sea and the sunsets can be seen from the beds in all the rooms!
In the garden there are plenty of banana plants, mango trees and we are gradually landscaping and planting more exotic flowering plants and bushes as and when we can. It was virgin forest before we built and so we get a lot of birds visiting us. The lower balcony is especially good for star gazing.

At all times we have use locally sourced materials and local craftsmen and labour. Almost every man and boy in the village has worked on our house at sometime or other.

We are still adding to the house and making improvements as we feel the need to. No rushing things in the Caribbean.
We have just, June 09, constructed an outside bbq area in the shade of a huge banana plant by the side of the house for all our guests and us to share. With great fresh fish everyday and local produce it will be used all the time I think.

The idea was for us to have a house to live in and share with friends and family. Then other people asked about coming to stay so then we have an income as well, perfect.

So far it is working out just fine and all who have stayed there have fallen in love with the village, it's people and the house which is very satisfying..We love it and hope you will as well.

Never felt the need for A/c. Louvered wooden shutters and a breeze blowing is much heathier!

Broadband promised by phone co but so far no. I use a 3G plug in for my laptop and there is a 'house' printer..
Dining Area: Seating for 4 people
Each apartment has it's own cooking and dining areas. Most people dine on the balcony.
Kitchen/Utility: Oven, Hob, Grill, Fridge, Freezer, Kettle, Toaster, Coffee maker, Washing machine, Ironing board, Iron
Each kitchen is fully equipped.
Outdoors: BBQ, Shared garden, Balcony, Terrace, Sunloungers, Patio table, Patio chairs
Access: Car not essential, Stairs
There is a good path up from the road, but the view makes it all worthwhile!
Services: Linen provided, Towels provided
We provide a change of linen/towels etc and seperate beach towels.
Meals: Self catering but a cook can be arranged for special occaissions.
Facilities in each room: Ensuite, Tea/Coffee making , Cooking Facilities, Fridge, Hairdryer
Shared washing machine. Most people carry an iPod or laptop these days.

Location description

Castara is not a resort!
It is a small quiet fishing village where people can relax and enjoy the beach and life in the village. The sandy palm tree fringed beach has lifeguards during the day and is very good for swimming and snorkling, beach fishing and doing as little or as much as you feel like. No beach hustlers!
The next beach up the coast is the undeveloped Englishmans Bay straight out of Robinson Crusoe!

Other activities

Swimming, snorkling, scuba, rainforest walks, birdwatching, Turtle watching in season, boat trips and of course liming!
NO jetskis or similar noisy activities! Good anchorage for sail boats. No fuelling up facilities

Local events

Fishermans festival, harvest festivals, boat race.
A micro brewery making English bitter and a pilsner is about to start production behind the beach. It all just gets better and better.

Tourist attractions

Quiet unspoilt fishing village on the edge of the rainforest. Small waterfall for a cold dip 15 minute walk up a small stream.
No poisonous snakes, spiders etc.

45 minutes by taxi from the airport. Fixed rate $250TT/$42USD.
Taylor's Car Rental, Alibabas or Ancle George in the village or several others at the airport. You can pick up your car at the airport
We can arrange pick up or car hire..
There is only one road up the West coast so if the sea is on your left you are going in the right direction!
There is a regular cheap bus service to Scarborough.
