And don t forget the kids – there are rock pools to be explored at the sides of the beach and then there is the amazing snorkelling for the initiated. This part of the coastline offers some of the best opportunities for spotting the local marine life.
The 3 beach bars are open all day, serving snacks, 3 course meals, cold drinks and ice creams.
The Red Cross has a base on the beach and their trained members are in attendance all day and every day throughout the season, to advise and ensure that the visitors enjoy their days on the beach in safety.

Other activities
MaoStart at Placa Colona and lose yourself in a warren of tight alleyways. Take a boat trip along the harbour for the best views of the quayside and naval base.
Fort Marlborough
Take a tour of the gloomy tunnels in this low-lying fort, built by the British in the 18th century.
Ses Pedreres De S’hostal
Walk through the bowels of this part-quarry-part-sculpture. Take in the incredible acoustics during one of the many live concerts in summer.
Xoriguer Gin Distillery
Sample one of the best legacies of the British occupation and grab a Menorcan memento at the Xoriguer Gin Distillery.
Ciutadella
Mao’s cultural rival with a surfeit of architectural legacies of the British era. Take a stroll along the canal-like harbour and dine on fresh lobster in one of the waterside restaurants.
With so many coves to choose from you’re spoilt for choice. Some are only accessible by private road where a small toll is often charged during the summer months.Best beach for…
The island’s signature dish is (unsurprisingly) seafood – caldereta de llagosta or lobster stew to be precise. Also, look out for pork with apples or plums and dozens of variations of oliaigues, or garlic soup. Unless you’re of a robust constitution, don’t be tempted by a Minorcan breakfast – neat gin!
A word of advice: don’t come to Minorca if you’re a nocturnal neon-seeker with a penchant for high decibels. That isn’t to say the lights go out at bed time. Mao, Ciutadella and most resort areas have a profusion of bars and a handful of clubs – just don’t expect A-list DJs and dancing till breakfast.
Cova de’n Xoroi
Bar by day and disco by night. Minorca’s most famous nightlife hotspot is located in a cave halfway down a sheer cliff that plunges into the sea. Legend has it that a pirate sheltering there met a watery death. It’s a wonder more revellers don’t follow suit.
For sheer diversity of shops, you should head for Mao or Ciutadella. In Mao, the area around Carrer Ses Moreres and Carrer Nou are home to the high-street labels. For stores of more individual character you’ll need to stroll down Moll de Ponent in the port area.Ciutadella’s ground zero for shopaholics is Ses Voltes and its numerous offshoots, where you’ll find plenty of opportunities to replenish your wardrobe.Talking of which, you can’t visit the island and not buy a pair of avarques – Minorcan leather sandals soled with old car tires. To purchase at the point of origin, try S’Avarca de Menorca on Carrer Angel, Mao. Not only does it have the widest choice, it’s also the oldest factory on the island.Xoriguer Gin and the famous Minorcan cheese should also be on the shopping list. Try the Xoriguer Distillery on Anden de Poniente in Mao for the former, La Bodega on Carrer Santissim in Ciutadella for the best wedge of cheese.Lovers of bric-a-brac have numerous artisan markets to choose from including Es Migjorn Gran on Tuesday evening, Mao on Friday evening and Ciutadella on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.
Local events
Fiestas in MenorcaFestes de Sant Joan, Ciutadella
Menorca has a fine tradition of fiestas (festes) that run throughout the summer, opening in Ciutadella and ending the season in Mahon. Visitors are welcomed at all events and there is truly no better way to both enjoy and understand the island.
The most famous event of all is Ciutadella's fiesta in honour of Sant Joan (St John) on 23rd and 24th June. Horses are part of the rich tradition and form the focal point of this very lively event - expect to see jousting, racing and spectators attempting to touch the horses heart for luck as they rear up!
For those over 18 be sure to try the traditional tipple of Menorcan fiestas - pomada. This pleasant cocktail is made from the local gin Xoriguer and lemonade, with plenty of ice.
